The last will and testament of William Christian, dated March 13th, 1786. This document lists the forty-seven people he enslaved and who they will be transferred to upon his death. The people William Christian enslaved are named as follows: James Kavanaugh, James Lumpkins, Peter, Lewis, Titus, John, Dinah and her child Wilson, Tom Body, Sarah, Hannah, Edincurg, Cloe, Little Jame, Jenny and their children Sarah, Adam, Betty, Jenny, and Moses, Noah, York, Sam, his wife Ruth, and their children Bill, Poll, Luke, Tom, and Little Sam, Phebe, Riah, Ben, Delphi, Simon, Lydia, Hannibal, Cesar, Will Trigg, Charles Trigg, Jame Trigg, Venus, Ben, Billey, Melissa, Betty, Harry, Tom Body, and Salley. He bequeaths the people he enslaved to his wife, Anne Christian, and advises her to create a road connecting Oxmoor and Alexander Scott Bullitt's home. Letter to Thomas Walker Bullitt from Mildred Ann Bullitt concerning the abolitionist movement, January 18th, 1861.
A letter from Mildred Ann Bullitt (Oxmoor) to her son, Thomas Walker Bullitt (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), dated January 18th. Mildred claims that Mrs. Winchester heard a story from an enslaved child that Black enslaved people would be freed soon and "if white folks didn't run fast, the Black people would kill them all." Mildred also writes that, "There are so many persons here who say their servants tell them they won't have to work for them much longer, that when Lincoln takes his seat they'll all be free." Mildred then relates how she told the people she enslaves that no one has the power to free them except her. She claimed that Cassius Clay couldn't free them, and neither could Abraham Lincoln. She describes the people she enslaves as "humble and well behaved," as well as scared of the abolitionists. She claims that the people she enslaves don't want to be hired out to people in the North because "they require so much more work of them [enslaved people] than the southern people do." Mildred refers to the previous overseer at Oxmoor, Oldham Bright, as "unprincipled" and that he "did all he could to corrupt them [enslaved people]." Mildred mentions Tinah by name, in passing. -

Letter to John C. Bullitt from Mildred Ann Bullitt concerning the health of the people they enslave, January 3rd, 1845.
In a letter from January 3rd, 1845, Mildred Ann Bullitt (at Oxmoor) to her son John (in Lexington) about the health of people enslaved by the Bullitt family. She writes, "Rachel has been declining ever since you left; Mary is not considered by any means out of danger, poor Diana looks wretchedly. I fear her situation is most critical. Lucinda is still unable to bear exertion. Dinah is now very unwell and several of the black children are sick." -
Letter to John C. Bullitt and Joshua Bullitt from Mildred Ann Bullitt concerning Henry Shipp, a man enslaved by William C. Bullitt, May 25th, 1840.
A letter from Mildred Ann Bullitt (Oxmoor) to her sons Joshua and John (Danville), dated May 25th, 1840. Mildred Ann Bullitt describes a planned robbery of Mr. Edwards by a white man, who had asked Henry Shipp, a man enslaved by William Christian Bullitt, to help him in exchange for free papers. Henry Shipp told Mr. Edwards of the plan and the white man was caught. -
Excerpts from "Recollections of Oxmoor," September 14th 1906.
A flyleaf copy of Henry M. Bullitt's recollection of Oxmoor, written in 1906. Six original pages are also in the folder. This document skips from page six to page forty-three, once it gets to Uncle Jack’s obituary. Bullitt writes extensively about the marriage of some enslaved people at Oxmoor. He writes that his mother gave Eliza to his sister Susan, but Eliza's husband Jim Sanders was owned by John Burke so Susan bought John from Mr. Burke for $1500 so the couple could stay together. Henry also wrote that "The negroes regarded their marriage as sacred and generally lived in harmony." All names of enslaved persons included are: Titus, John Gordon, Frank Taylor, “Uncle” Big Bill, Eliza (and her husband Jim Sanders), George Washington (usually called “Wash”), Little Bill, Nathan, Samuel, Caroline, Williams, Harry Jones, “Aunt Dinah,” and Jake Miller. -
