Mourning Bracelet

Imitation jet

ca. 1885

1947.2.43

Imitation jet bracelet made of polished rectangles strung on two elastic cords. Back of the rectangle pieces are carved to fit around the wrist more comfortably. Belonged to Frances Ann Thruston Ballard (1826-1896). She wore them every day later in life, possibly to mourn the death of her husband Andrew Jackson Ballard (1815–1885).
