The Rev. Chas. Clokey of NewAlbany having responded to an invitation to address the Asso. upon this occasion, the regular order of exercises was suspended until after the address.
He determined to prove by two arguments alone: the Divine argument, and the argument of Nature, that woman is created the equal of man intellectually and spiritually. The two halves being equal, were both intended for the same responsibilities and purposes; examples being give to illustrate.
He interpreted the 15thverse, third chap of Genesis, as meaning that woman's influenceshould oppose evil.
Passages of scripture were quoted to show where woman's words had been those of wisdom and justice. The most notable illustration given was from the XXVII chap of St Mathew, where Pilate's wife, Claudia Proc[u]la, sent unto the King, this message, “Have thou nothing to do with that just man.” In concluding his remarks, the speaker showed himself an ardent believer in woman's right to suffrage.
A rising vote of thanks was tendered at the close.
The business before the meeting was now considered. The Sec'y's report was read and accepted. The Treasurer reported that state dues amounting to $3.50 had been forwarded to state Treasurer
