Graphic Work: Posters and Book Design
Born and raised in Louisville, Julius Friedman initially enrolled at the University of Kentucky to study architecture. He later transferred to the University of Louisville and focused on graphic design.
In 1968 Julius Friedman and colleague Nathan Felde formed the graphic design studio Images. Focusing on book and poster design, Images was a pillar in an emerging downtown Louisville creative scene. The partnership lasted over a decade, producing cutting-edge work that garnered international acclaim and established both designers’ reputations. Despite the lure of major cities and an expanding client portfolio, Friedman remained rooted in Louisville and continued producing posters throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Iconic works such as the famous “Toe on Egg” for the Louisville Ballet secured his place in design history. Friedman’s posters have been collected and exhibited by The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Poster Art in Poland, The National Museum of Modern Art in Japan, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
