Title

Letter from Henry Clay to Jonathan Thompson, City of New York. Harrodsburg Ky., 25 July 1831

Description

Discusses the current New York political situation, especially pertaining to the National Republicans and Anti-Masons. Given the Anti-Masons' principles can see their motive for acquiring state power, but fails to see their motive for controlling the federal government. Elections will be decided next week. Both sides are making great exertions. In addition, the Democrats are spending a vast amount of money and using other "profligate means" to achieve their ends. The National Republicans will be "mortified and disappointed" if they fail to win a majority in the state legislature and Congress. Relates the names of four men in Kentucky that Thompson can write to with "perfect confidence. "
