Isaac,
I have long esteemed you as one of my best
friends and would feel myself honoured as well as gratified
in still being your intimate. I have often beguiled
the weary hour in telling you the cares of a fantas-
tic boy whose ideas of life were too glowing for this
sublunary sphere and often have you given an atten-
tive ear to my interests - yes Isaac I know you will
still be pleased to hear from me tho I have quit the
crowded city for the tented field and the theme
of my epistle is changed from love to war.

When I was last with you I told you of
my fearful hopes concerning an object that was
once dear to me. By my subsequent letters
you learned those fears were almost entirely re-
solved and that a prospect of the communica-
tion of my wishes was at hand, but this
in the event I found a dream. Yes Isaac
I would not wish to disgrace any one you
think highly of in your eyes that do not be-
lieve me, so base as to speak from pique alone
when I say that I almost believe her conduct
was only to get my to make a second propo-
sition that might revenge herself of my conduct
to a certain scoundrel I brought to his senses,
conduct of which I need not be ashamed
in sight of man nor heaven. Scorn was
all the return my proffers met with. The old
one as usual acted the hypocrite. This aroused
all the man within me. I have forgotten</text>

done my duty to the satisfaction of my supe-

applause. I have since I joined the Army
been on three scouts one towards
Fort McArthur one towards fort
Wayne and one to the head of the
Rapids which have given me an op-
portunity of seeing the most of the sur-
rounding country. About half of
it is very fine and will one day afford
great settlements.

I yesterday evening returned from Ft. Wayne
after an absence of 15 days. I was ordered to that
place with others to ascertain what volunteer
and what Regular clothing was on hand

Pantaloons - 527
Shoes - 377

Mittens - [do?] - 637
Shirts - 49
Caps - 7
Comforts - 12
Worsted Stockings - 12 pair

and a few other articles besides about as much
more to individuals and 18 waggon loads
more that by last advices were on the way
between. Cincinatti and St. Mary's -
no clothing designated particularly for the Regulars
have yet come on. Some Indian goods we have got
hold of however I hope will prevent any more of
them from dying so soon as we can get it
made up. Government has been palpably ne-
gligent of the US Troops in this quarter.

We have no news here. We are all anxious
to get on to Canada but supplies come on so
slow that some begin to despair. The river is
so high now that I hope provisions enough
will be got on before it freezes. I believe
it is Genl Harrison's determination to move
on if possible. If the boats get down it
will be possible.</text>

<text>Drawing from many historical collections at the Filson Historical Society, First American West incorporates maps, diaries, letters, ledgers, and objects. The collection documents the travels of the first Europeans to enter the trans-Appalachian West, the maps tracing their explorations, their relations with Native Americans, and their theories about the region's mounds and other ancient earthworks. Naturalists and other scientists describe Western bird life and bones of prehistoric animals. Books and letters document the new settlers' migration and acquisition of land, navigation down the Ohio River, planting of crops, and trade in tobacco, horses, and whiskey.<br /><br />The First American West: The Ohio River Valley, 1750-1820 consists of 15,000 pages of original historical material documenting the land, peoples, exploration, and transformation of the trans-Appalachian West from the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth century.<br /><br /><p></p>

It is pretty certain Detroit has fallen by the perfidy of Hull - The probability is that Fort Wayne is or will be taken before we can get to it - Fort Chicago is taken -- The Prisoners after the capitulation were murdered by the Indians --The noted Wm Wells is among the dead - The Loss of artillary and amunition [illegible] at Detroit makes it necessary we should be better provided in going out than would otherwise have been necessary - This delays our march - We hope to be well prepared -- I trust we shall be able to drive the Enemy before us - The Spirits of the Army are Excited by the disasters following Hulls departure from Honor - Gov.

At a General Courtmartial of which Major Kennedy was President, was tried Ensign Heason Talbot of Capt Forest Company, of 16th regt Ky. Mi. Charged by Capt J Ellis as Officer of the Day, on the 9th Oct last viz. 1st for unofficer like Conduct, for sleeping on his post; and 2ndly for refusing to parade the Guard on the 9th Oct A. M. between the hours of 12 & 1 at the Guard fire, when ordered by the Officer of the day- It would appear by the proceedings that the prisoners, Ensign Talbot, Came before the Court to answer to the Charges exhibited against him, and made no objections to any of the members composing it; but here I must observe that the court implicated itself in the further prosecution of their dutyThey proceeded to the examination of witnesses, and the passing of a sentence without putting the prisoner to his place, thereby preventing him from using those advantages which the Law guaranteed him. He will therefore as his trial has not been formal and just, resume his sword and return to the line of his duty

The Court then proceeded to the trial of Lieut. Henry Wood, Charged with unofficer like conduct; for allowing this guard or part thereof, to leave the Guard fire in violation of a positive order of the Officer of the day - But as the court have committed the same error in this trial as as in the foregoing one; Lileut. Wood is therefore or =dered to resume his sword and return to the line of his duty - After which the court proceeded to the trial of Capt S Goodan, Charged with unofficer like conduct, for signing false reports of his company on the mornings of the 4th and 5th Inst To which charge the prisoner pleaded "not guilty"- The Court after mature deliberation on the testimony adduced in support of the above charge,</text>
