Hannah Grushon Deweese (1818-1884) portrait
Hannah Deweese was married to Cornelius DeWeese and lived on a 900 acre farm, Hunter’s Bottom, in Carroll County, Kentucky. She was in her 30s when this portrait was painted of her, with what appears to be hair and/or mourning jewelry, including a brooch similar in style to pieces in the Filson's collection (see 1962.3.1 & 1962.3.3), a bracelet, and a ring. When Hannah died in 1884, eight of her thirteen children preceded her in death. -

Oval shaped brooch with locks of hair woven in a flower design on both sides. Brooch was worn by Frances Ann Thruston Ballard (1826-1896) and contained the hair of 4 of her children who lived to maturity; Charles, Abby, S. Thruston and Rogers Clark Ballard Thruston . -

Imitation jet bracelet made of polished rectangles strung on two elastic cords. Back of the rectangle pieces are carved to fit around the wrist more comfortably. Belonged to Frances Ann Thruston Ballard (1826-1896). She wore them every day later in life, possibly to mourn the death of her husband Andrew Jackson Ballard (1815–1885). -

Necklace made of brown hair woven to create beads. Between each bead has a thin gold ring between it. A metal cross pendant with engraved floral scrollwork is attached to a metal plate with an empty shield engraved on it. -

Large jet cross with floral relief and linked chain. Worn by Elizabeth H. Bates Durrett (1831-1889), who lost one daughter, Florence Montgomery Durrett (1863-1869) at age six and a second daughter, Lily Bates Durrett (1859-1881) at the age of 21. Elizabeth also made a mourning quilt using material from her daughters' clothing. See also miniature of Lily. -

Bracelets in memory of Alexander Scott Bullitt and his wife Pricilla Christian Bullitt, who settled 1200 acres known as Oxmoor, in Jefferson County, Kentucky. -
