Letter addressed to Louis J. Discher, Co F 120 Infantry, Camp Sevier, S.C.
Tuesday Night
April 9 - 18
Dear Louis:
Your second letter received yesterday, and we are anxiously waiting for that long letter you are going to write.
I went back to see Mrs Seare Saturday afternoon and took her one of your pictures. She thought it was splendid and said to tell you that you made one of the best looking soldiers she had ever seen. Now don't get too conceited over that. Annie came in while I was there and Mrs. Seare showed it to her. She said “Well if that don't look just like Mr. Louis.” Cecilia went to see the parade Saturday afternoon and it was real good.
Sunday afternoon Mary Frances went to picture show with Maude Hinkle and afterward on Fourth Street they met Sergeant Bueren and Young. They talked to them awhile and Bueren said how sorry he was that he did not get out to the house, so Mary Frances invited them out for the evening. Bueren said he had an engagement, but Young told her he would come. We were very much surprised to see him. Our party turned out better than we thought it would. The Heintzmanns and Echsner did not come, so then it was Martin, Johnnie Norton, Alfred Huber and Young. Mary Hinkle brought her music and she certainly can play and sing fine. Willie took them all home in the machine.
Aunt Addie came over yesterday morning to cook soap, stayed last night and as she had to cook it over again she is staying tonight. Last night while we were eating supper Helen Harpring called up and asked us to come down to see Marie and her babies as she was staying out home, and was going to leave today for Nashville, Tenn. Clara, Cecilia, Aunt Addie, Willie & I all went down, and they were telling us that Schrorer has the contract for the hauling for the camp there, and he has taken all five of his trucks down. Last Thursday he took all their furniture down on one of the trucks, and as soon as Marie gets there they are going to house keeping. Rude and Joe are both going to raise tobacco on the farm this summer. I believe they thought they would raise about eight acres. Ed was there yesterday and they said he is going to take another position in St. Louis. Did you ever see such a family for moving around to different places?
We are having a touch of winter weather here. This morning it was down to thirty degrees and there has been such a high wind all day that we feel as cold as in the middle of winter. Every thing looks so pretty. We cut and raked the whole lawn last week, and Willie cleaned the strawberry patch. The lilacs are all in bloom. Our sweet peas are just starting to come up and last Saturday afternoon Willie planted the flower seeds in the hot bed for us.
Clara sent your picture today. I do not know if you will get it before this letter or not. Papa has hauled four loads of coal and expects to finish tomorrow. We have about sixty five little chickens and more coming on. Willie went to the Gibson Dance tonight, he took Agnes Hinkle. The quarter of eleven car is coming down so I suppose I had better say good-bye With love from all.

Y.M.C.A. No. 152
[Thursday] Nov. 7, 1918
Dearest -
I am going over to the Y. to see if there is any mail from you, but first I am going to write a few lines.
Last night we had a feast fit for a queen and we all had a good time also we got some extra pay for our exertions, and so did the K of Ps as they worked until eleven o'clock so as to get the dishes washed. the package I sent you yesterday evening was a sample of the cake and also some of the paper napkins. I would have sent more but they were all used up before I knew it. You can keep them as a rememberance [sic] of the 6th day of November 1918. Say ^1:30 PM^ but I am happy word just came that Germany had accepted the peace terms and the bells and whistles were making a lot of noise.
oh! I hope it so for I sur[e]ly want to come back to you and home.
I will finish this when I have come back from the Y.
Friday morning Nov. 8. will try to write you a few more lines. oh! sweetheart Nellie are you sick? that you dont write I am worr[y]ing about you it has been more than a week and yet I have not had a line from you.
I went down to see Mrs. Klotter last evening they said they had been worried about me as they had not heard or seen me for so long, but Anna had written that I was home sick. They were tickeled [sic] to see me.
And say! they have t[w]o new babies in their family the d[a]ughter has a boy and the daughter-in-law has a daughter. I wonder if I brought them that luck ha! ha! they are so proud of these new comers.
The Louisville people tried to tear up things yesterday when the good news came and they were just wild last night. say I will be coming home some of these days and then home and you.
I am going over to see about my money as they say I can't get it until Dec.! and I am going to hallo & whop, and raise h--l in general because I was home sick and could not sign the pay rool [sic] in October, but I did in September.
This to one I love
I am your as ever

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Friday, September 6, 1918.

25 Battery F.A.C.O. T S Camp Taylor, Kentucky September 6, 1918

Sweetheart Nellie - Well this [is] Friday and [I] write a few more lines as I did not get to write yesterday. was off duty at noon so I went over to get a pass to town. well I got it, and about 4 oclock I started, found the Klotter place but no one at home then[.] so I walked about 8 blocks and came back. found Mrs. Klotter and her daughter-in-law. they had been expecting me so I was taken right in and made to feel at home. their son came next and her two daughters afterward who are married[.] at last but not least came the father. we had supper and about 7.30 I came back to camp having spent an enjoyable evening. they are poor but about as friendly as any one I have met. they asked me to come whenever I wanted to and could, so perhaps I may. but if you could have been there it would have been almost like home, see it only likes [sic] you for me to have home. Well my hay fever is here at last but not so bad as last year[.] I hope it doesn't. it is very cool now and that does not help a fever any, other wise I feel well. Mr Jones may be at the door when I go to make soup see ha! ha! Say but [you] should have had a slice of my corn bread yesterday. the head cook said it beat any he had made since in camp (Oh lordy) but I feel big. I have not had a letter all this week, and it is Friday and only one last. [Sic.] it seems like I have tough luck all the time but if I [k]new where I would be all the time it would be different. There is a Fair on for this week in Louisville but guess I will not go as it takes money and I don't want to spend to[o] much as pay day is not here yet and don't just [know] when it will [be] as it [is] so uncertain. A cook by name Brown and I went and filled our straw ticks (but it was not Rosa Brown) so now we will sleep warmer. I nearly froze last night altho I had two blankets over me and one under. It is so crowded in this room that [there] is hardily [sic] room for any one to pass between the beds and it makes it very unhandy.
Bye Bye love and sweetheart until I write again.
Frank Raymond Lane

Letter addressed to Louis J. Discher, Co F 120 Infantry, Camp Sevier, S.C.
April 6 / 18
Sat PM 4:30
Dear Louis:
As I have a little time I thought I would write you a few lines. Lieut Dallas Abraham leaves Monday for Camp Gordon, Georgia. Agnes is going to St Louis to visit her mother for a while before she starts to take her course in nursing. I have just come in from seeing the women of Louisville parade there were a good many marched. I tried to induce Cecelia to go in it with your service flag but she would not do it. The most attractive division were the waitresses of the Red Cross Lunch Room all in white.
Aunt Maggie had me to take your picture to Rogers to have framed for her. Jim McGee said to tell you Hello. he said he will soon be in it and hopes he will look as good as that picture. Willie went to see “Turn to the Right” Thursday night and said it was great. The three Hinkle girls are coming out tomorrow night and the following boys are invited Martin Holzknecht, Louis and Bla[??] Heintzman, Alfred Huber, Johnnie Echsner and Johnnie Norton. Some interesting party isn't it?
Otillia saw Joe Hekeman on the car Wednesday. she said he surely is a good looking soldier and his suit is some fit. He is still in the Depot Brigade, has a squad of foreigners from Illinois. They say there are very few left of that crowd that went out when he did. They must be sending the boys across in great numbers. [H]ave you any idea how long you will stay at Camp Sevier? Perhaps if we would know in time, Aunt Maggie and I might come to Greenville and show you all a good time before you go. Auto trips, theatre parties etc is my idea, do not know whether it will materialize. I have found out as I thought what busted means. Uncle Frank wants to know if you have but one pen. I do not know what he means. Whenever you write letter to First & Walnut mention Albert in some way. Have you come across any one you know? When is their recreation time there Saturday afternoon and Sunday or do they have Wednesday afternoon too. How is your ankle, has it given you any trouble?
Be sure to meet the chaplains. [F]ind out where they are from. [G]o to the K.C. buildings.
[T]hey received your card out home today and Aunt Maggie and Uncle Frank got theirs.
It is still cool and has now begun to rain.
If you can afford it I suppose they boys here would appreciated a card. [I]t would be 13 of them without Uncle Willie. If that is too many address a card to The Boys which would include all. Have you been paid?
You will have some questions to answer in your next letter to
Yours lovingly
Clara
What would be appreciated in the way of eats?

Dearest -
This is enough to make a preacher swear one will tell you to write one address and some one else will tell you another. now the Mess Sargent says this above address is right. so look out that you get this one I may get your letters but it is best to write to this address.
I went over to my old address and got a letter from Pa. they say Alice and Fred are going to have a sale the 15th Aug and that the grain is going to spoil unless it quits raining altho their corn is extra good.
Did you get my watch back O.K.?
It is hot enough to wash dishes in any of the water and the men can hardly stand to drill altho they could stand it better than if they had ice water.
It certainly has been hot in the kitchen today, and I just have to stand it until tomorrow noon then I get off 24 hrs.
Well the women were thick down here Saturday evening and Sunday but none for me and it was lonesome to[o]. seemed like I had no friends, but I guess I have just the same.
A bunch of the K. Ps are setting here and they are talking all kinds of nonsense and I come very near writing some it it to[o].
Say don't kill off all those roosters as I don't hear any talk down here ha! ha!
Noel said Octave had taken my place I suppose he meant teaching my class ha! ha! hope so any ways. because if it was my other place I would come home right away, see.
Keep all you kisses and hugs for me.
With love
Frank

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Friday, September 6, 1918.

25 Battery F.A.C.O. T S Camp Taylor, Kentucky [Wednesday] September 4, 1918

Sweetheart - Again I will write you a few lines and continue my old story yet will [add] a few new sentences. Went over to Company yesterday evening and ask to come home Sat., but nothing doing. I have to be here four months first then will get the big sum of five days. but I did get a chance to get a pass to town, so if nothing prevents I will go see Mrs Klotter tomorrow evening and if every thing is O.K. perhaps we can arrange so that you can come down there and we can meet because if she is a cousin and a friend of Johns I don't see where it would come amiss, do you? I will write when I get back from there if I get to go and tell you what kind of a time I had and what I saw. It looks kind of hard to see fellows all around you going home and you can't. I guess we will get some pay very soon now as I understood that they would pay off in our company today so as I am in that company I expect some pay. I just finished a letter to Alice Schulte, and when I finish this I am going to write to Pa. I wonder if they have moved yet. I have not heard from them since they were here only thru Ann and she talked of nothing only about me wanting Pa to quit farming. This finds me feeling well and I hope you are well and not worr[y]ing yourself half to death. sometimes when I get to thinking about you it seems as if I could not stand it any longer. yet I guess all will come out right in the end. Well hoping to see you some time before long I am as every yours
With love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Well I will write an answer to your letters which I received today. they were written on Nov. 8 & 10 so you see they were on the way a good while but I got them just the same.
We just heard this evening that we will be transferred tomorrow morning and will be ready in a few days to come home so they say but I am going to wait until I get my papers so you must wait with patience as I know you will. I am trying too but it is very near more than I can do.
I also got a letter from my beloved sister-in-law Ruth. so you will get to read it when I come home if you want to.
As to that cake I sent[,] you can do as you please. but I sent it to you to eat but you know best and can use it as a [word indecipherable].
The boys are leaving every day in large numbers so we will soon know what they are going to do with us. I will let you know just as soon as I know as we will find out about two or three days before.
I suppose the load of furniture is all paid for as every thing else is see.
I hope that when I come home some one will say something about Duncans I want to tell them something that they won't forget, as you know that I am wearing U.S. uniform and they can't insult that, and as to making Mr. Duncan pay for that transportation that is all a fraud[.] the Government pays all charges and if I was Mr. Duncan I would write the Government headquarters about it.
When this reaches you I hope to know when I am coming home.
Your soldier boy, With love
Frank

Dearest -
Well maybe I can get my address straightened out after a while[.] they said my mail should be sent to the above address, so don't forget when you write.
Well this is another Sunday here and it seems like two years as I have not been feeling well[.] I had another shot in the arm yesterday and that makes me feel bad.
It certainly is some hot down here but not like I expected as it dosent [sic] worry me anymore than when at home, maybe its because I am inside. It was so dusty here yesterday that you could hardily [sic] see and the room was an inch thick with it.
Just as soon as I get over my shots I am going to ask for a furlough home and that won't be very long[.] will get my last shot about 1 week from Monday (tomorrow) but I don't know whether I will get it or not.
Did you find your letter in the drawer, but I hope you did not open it yet as I don't want you too [sic] until some other time.
The women and girls were going in all direction after supper last night and you can see them every where today, but I have no one down here and only thots [sic] of you because I am here and [you] are at home. I suppose you are all done plowing and have threshed by this time, and it seems funny not to see any one farming around here and to hear no threshing machines.
The men are still coming in and there will soon be about 80,000 here so you see they still have a few men left. the papers say the allies are still driving the Germans back so I hope the war will soon be over.
Well I can think of nothing else to write so will quit for this time.
With love
Frank

Letter addressed to Corporal Louis J. Discher, Co. F, 120 Infantry, 30 Division, American Expeditionary Forces. Letter was redirected to several other army units before being stamped “Return to Writer.”
Letter No. 60
Fri. P.M. Jan 31/19
Dear Louis:
How glad I was to get the telephone message a few minutes ago that the letter had arrived, written Jan 5th. [I]t was so disappointing to hear every day no letter from Louis. Of course we knew one was on the way after hearing you had received your box. I just wonder what you were hoping would be in it, and when it did come if you were disappointed. I am glad you mentioned each article because we know it arrived as it was sent. The tin lining was a good idea, because the Gocke's were telling Cecelia at the club that Robert's box had come back home all mashed up. They were so angry that they did not try to locate him instead of returning it to this side.
Now, Louis you have lots to be thankful for, as you have always received your mail and very many boys over there have not had one line from home. Olivia Borse said that Will Wagner had never gotten any of his mail. It is a shame that you had to spend your Christmas week in such discomfort and pray tell me what on earth should you boys go to the rifle range for when you expect to get out of the army in a short while. [S]ome say the higher officers want to hold on to their jobs. That of course is only talk. Capt. Geher said the other day that when a whole div is together like the 30th they always continue to drill and practice, so as to keep the men in condition.
Won't home and a bed look good to you? I hope and pray that you will keep your health and get home safely. I still have Aunt Lou to burn a candle for you every day at the Mother of Perpetual Help altar and you see the people all over the world are praying for the soldiers during February in the Apostleship of Prayer.
I just came back from the bank. [Y]ou will be surprised when you get to 2nd & Market and see the Liberty Ins. Bank. [T]hey now have a safety vault. Uncle Frank had me to get a box to keep all of our valuable papers in as we now have a good many to take care of.
Mrs. Jos Sass was in this afternoon. [S]he inquired about you. I think I told you that Lee Michael has come home. Bernard Schieman and Robert Bosse expect to get out of camp soon.
Wednesday night we are all at home except Willie. [L]ast night Cecelia and Mary F. went to camp. I refused. The Traub's aunt received a pass and the bunch went on that one. Eleanor Gambert was out with a crowd and Angela Huber came over from the hospital for a while. Willie was sore he had planned to go to the gymnasium for the first time last night and I spoiled it all. Cecelia came in with the machine yesterday afternoon. She parked it here and we went down on Fourth St to shop. She then went to the dentist and called up here at 5 o'clock to ask if she should get the machine or if we would come home in it. I told her to leave it. Then I told Uncle Frank to finish up and ride over with us. [W]e did not get home until nearly seven. Willie had intended coming in on the 7:10, so you know. After supper he went down in the garage and changed all the tires on the machine, put on our last new one that you laid in for us. They have had one on with a big piece out of it and Cecelia has been very dubious about that tire. I still feel very nervous when riding with her and it makes her so angry, but I can not help it.
Mr. Henry Zimmer was in the store yesterday. [H]e asked about you, and said he saw Albert Kaelin at the shop in the morning. I am anxious to see how he looks. Joe Kurzendorfer was in this afternoon. [H]e was a sight, his face all in a bandage with holes in it for his eyes. Aunt Maggie has gone out to our lotto at St Francis this afternoon. I do not think I will go tonight because I have too many papers to read. Johnnie Beirne is not here today. [H]is folks said he had such pains in his back he could not get up this morning.
Hoping this letter finds you ready to leave for home, I am
Your loving sister
Clara

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Wednesday, September 4, 1918.

25 Battery F.A.C.O. T S Camp Taylor, Kentucky [Tuesday] September 3, 1918

Sweetheart - This finds me all cleaned up ready for a rest, and I think I kneed [sic] it as I have worked every since three oclock this morning. I am going over to the Company this evening and see if I can get a furlough for next week. I don't know what they will say but I guess we will leave here next week Monday to West Point for a hike but I am not sure so if I can get home[.] I am coming see as you had better not write after Wednesday or when you get this letter because you see we never know from one week to another what we will do. We sure put up some dinner today[.] we had baked beans, rice pudding, vegitable [sic] soup, syrup, and ice tea, also cold tomatoes. [I] am getting to be quite a cook, and will show you how when I get a chance. I want to write Alice a letter after awhile to let her know that I am O.K., because she made me promise to write when I got time, so this will be a good chance. I tell you I wish I could be some where so that I could have your letters because they are some great comfort to me. but when they move one around so much you don't know what to do. If this war was only over with what a time we would have for sure. we would go every where and not work for two weeks, would we? Well this makes the seventh week and it seems some times like it was seven years and again it seems like yesterday. and how well I remember the moment at last when I had to leave you[.] it was almost to[o] much but I had to hold up because there were others besides myself, see. well I hope it will be the last time when I have to do any thing like that again.
Hoping to see you soon I remain as ever yours with love
Frank R. Camp Zachary Taylor
32rd Training Battery
F.A.C. O.T.S.
[Tuesday] Dec. 3, 1918
Dearest Nellie -
Well I will try and write you a few lines now as I have some time. I got back from Burnside last night and reported to Lieut. Longnecker then had to move all my stuff over to the 32nd Battery as the 33 is all busted up and we are waiting now for our papers.
Louis Maxie was one of our K.P.s and when he died I was asked to take his body home, and I could not refuse as he was a friend of mine. I started on Sunday morning at 7-10 and arrived in Danville [Kentucky] at 11-30 changed cars and landed in Burnside 2-30. his father and two sons met me and they had no undertaker or hearse so I called for the marshell [sic] and turned the body over to him. then we went over to the house and had the papers signed showing that they had received the body. then as I had a headache went to the hotel (Seven Gabels) [sic] and went to bed about 5 oclock.
That was the saddest family I ever saw and it was almost to[o] much for me and I hope I don't have to take another body home.
Well we go on shift at noon and perhaps we will be changed any time and I hope that I will get home soon.
I got your letter that you wrote Nov. 26 and say I was tickled half to death as I was not expecting it. but I will write when ever I get a chance so do not worry because I will be home some time before long.
This is brown paper but not the kind Charley Baker uses so you do not have to be afraid ha! ha!
Well I am going to write Pa a letter so I will bring this to an end.
Bye Bye dear heart for a little while

Letter addressed to Louis J. Discher, Co F 120 Infantry, Camp Sevier, S.C.
April 3, 1918
Dear Louis -
Was surely glad to receive your nice long letter today.
I was in at the Flag Raising Sunday with the Kastners. It certainly was a lovely day for it, and they had a fine crowd there. Met so many people that we know and they all inquired for you. Afterwards we walked through fourth St. Monday night Billy and I went to the K of C dance. Had a very nice time. Marie Doherty asked about you. I knew a good many that were there. Margaret Brown, Lucille Kern, Florence Pike, Lucille O'Conner, Lieut. Richmond[?], and some more that you dont know. There were about a dozen officers there, and they had about six tuckers [sic].
Mr Fraas took charge of every thing. When we went out to get in the machine it was raining, a summer thunder shower, and we had another one last night. Tuesday afternoon my club met at Mary Senn's. She had the lunch table fixed so cute for Edith Herbold, with the bride and groom and ring bearer cupids in the center, and favors at each place. Olga Klein had her visitor with her. Lois Stice's younger sister Eunice. She spent two weeks with Lois, and is staying a few days with Olga. Edith Herbold gets married Thursday night in the priest parlor, because Mr. Wade the man she is marrying is a non catholic. Elizabeth Campbell wants to know what you though of Lieut. Wing. It seems like she has been going out with him quite a bit. Capt. Adams & Lieut Smith are going to be in the Bannon and Curran wedding party. I dont know who the others will be. Henrietta is going to be the maid of honor, Elizabeth and two of Marie's friends will be the bridesmaids. The wedding will be at high noon, twelve thirty, April 20.
Wish you all were in Louisville so you could help eat some of the easter eggs that we have. You know we dyed one hundred and eight. Fixed a good many baskets for the neighbor children, and put a good many in each one, but there are so many for us to eat that we are sick of them.
You wrote that every thing is blooming down there. I wish you could see our yard every thing is the same as in the south, so pretty and green and all in bloom. The grass has been cut, and we expect to plant our flowers in a few days. Senn's have a new picture of Robert Traim taken with an officers cap on. It certainly is splendid of him. How do you like living in a tent, how large is Camp Sevier, and how do you like the officers? It is nearly twelve o'clock so I will close.
With love from all
Mary Frances

Dearest Nellie -
Received your welcome letter at noon today, while eating my Thanksgiving dinner. it was some dinner. consisted of the following. Turkey, cranberry Sauce, dressing, cream peas, sweet potatoes, bananas, celery, apples and gravey [sic]. it was the best dinner we have had since I have been in camp, but it was not [as] it would have been at home, where I expect to be before long.
The candidates who get their discharges will leave Saturday and the ones who remain will be transferred to Battery 32 just across the road. then we will either be sent back to our former company or be discharged from here. but if we go back to the Depot Brigade we will be discharged from there.
Oh! I can hardily [sic] wait till I get home and to you. rabbit hunting and all like we did once before. ha! ha!
Well we just got out of quarentine [sic] at noon today and can go down to Coke Station once more and see the leg show ha! ha! as that is all it is. but wait until I get home I will make you laugh, or I will die trying.
I am sorry to hear that the Flu is raging again but guess it is the luck of the neighborhood to have something wrong most of the time. You never said whether you got my letter with my picture in it or not. but no matter I have some left.
Well if you want to write you must write at once or I may be out of here before it reaches me.
You must excuse this paper as it is the best I could do, and I had to borrow it.
hoping to be with you soon I am as ever your loved one

Dearest -
This is a Sunday so different from what the other Sundays have been, but it is O.K. as we have a meeting at the Barricks every Sunday morning at 8.30.
Well Nellie when you can send me a bar of washing soap as I had to get a bar yesterday it was ivory and cost 10c so you see every thing is not cheap down here.
James Wilsons wife asked if James had seen me. I guess he has as I sleep right by his side.
When I get to come home on a furlough I will have lots to tell you that I can not write. It seems that some one has to steal as some[one] just now stole a comfort kit. but so far I have not lost anything.
Well I will have to close as it will soon be assembly and I want to close before they call as we have to get when they call.
Write to me whenever you have time as I will have to move some of these days to a different place and that means about a week without mail.
With love
Yours only

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Thursday, August 29, 1918.
16 Battery Officers Training School, Camp Taylor, Kentucky Aug 28, 1918
Dearest Nellie - Again I will write a few lines as I am waiting for my leggings to dry so I can put them on. think I will try to go over and see Mrs. Klotter this evening if nothing happens, as I would like to see her before I leave here, and if I do I am going to write and tell you what kind of a time I had. Last night I dreamed I was at home with my folks, also that you were present. but this morning it was only a dream. It has quit raining and the sun is shining out bright and pretty. it is also cooler. Well I certainly have been sleeping the last few nights[.] can't hardily [sic] get awake at all, but when I one get washed I feel fine. The boys are preparing to leave just as fast as possible as they have to get every thing in tip top shape before they leave, and must turn in all their old clothes first then they will buy new uniforms for themselves. they all get a few days furlough, but some live so far away that I don't think they can get home. Pa must have rented the Rosengards place after they went home from here as he said he did not know what they would do. I have been trying to get him to quit, but I guess I had just as well quit because he wont as long as he lives and then I have nothing to say anyway. Suppose Ann will get the most of the fruit as she always does, then complains that they can't get any thing to live on. it is something all the time. We have the name of having the cleanest kitchen and barricks [sic] of any in Camp and we want to leave here with kind of a name. you aught [sic] to see me scrub and mop the floor. oh! well I will show you when I come home just how I do it so you need not worry ha! ha! When the bugle blows in the morning at 5 oclock all the candidates have to get up, are given fifteen minutes to dress then the Seargant [sic] blows a little whistle and they fall out or come to attention in a line where the roll is called. they they go thru an exercise for 30 minutes then they fall out for mess, then after mess or breakfast they are given what ever is assigned to them, and so on until retreat at night or 6 oclock when they get supper. After supper they have a study period until nine oclock. as you see the life of a soldier is not all play. It would be a grand sight if you could see them when they are drilling or when they march with the military band. it makes one feel like he had cold chills running up and down his spine. Seven years ago this month I started keeping company with you and I can say that while I have seen some sad moments I have spent the most happy years of my life by your side and in you presence. you have been an inspiration to me and it has made me a better man in every way, for which I thank you in my weak way. I have tried to return the best I have to you but don't know how I have succe[e]ded. You will have to excuse this change in pen and pencil as my pen is empty and I was not quite thru so will finish with this pencil. Those cigars you sent were the best I have smoked in a long time[.] they were so mild, were not a bit strong, and I smoked the last one just a while ago. also I eat my chockalate [sic] bar it was just fine and tasted just like more. I am going to get me two buttons to wear on my coat collar when I find out just where I belong. some of the boys are wearing one with U.S.[?] on one and 159 Depot Brigade on the other, but I won't get mine until I find out for sure.
Well good bye until tomorrow,
As ever with love,
Frank

Letter addressed to Corporal Louis J. Discher, Co. F, 120 Infantry, 30 Division, American Expeditionary Forces. Letter was redirected to several other army units before being stamped “Return to Writer.”
Letter No. 59
Mon P.M. Jan 27 1919
Dear Louis:
I just had a telephone call from Dorothy telling me she had received your letter of Jan 3rd. [S]he was so glad to get it. I suppose ours will come tomorrow. Yes everybody else thinks it was so unjust to keep you all “over there” and return those so quickly that had just arrived. The remains of the 84th is now coming in[.] [M]ost of their men have been used as replacements and 300 died of the influenza. My friend Mrs. Batt sent me a clipping this morning with news that the 30th Division would disembark at Charleston, SC and be demobolized [sic] at Camp Jackson or Sevier. Indications are that you will arrive at Charleston between February 1st and 15th. I hope you get away from South Carolina in a hurry because all the boys sure do hate that place.
Thursday night at camp we met Mr Fried from Camp Jackson, brother of the little visitor of Weber's from St. Louis. He was a lovely boy, left for his home on Friday. There was a very nice crowd in the aud. Not as jammed as before they gave out the passes to the chaperones. We went out in the Ford well packed, eight with the driver. Cecelia can not take the machine because that miserable bridge on the Poplar Level road finally broke down, and you have to go down on the side of the road to get around it, very dangerous Willie thinks.
Friday night Cecelia and I went to choir practise [sic], heard that Blase Heintzman has gone to Alabama to work. I bet both he and Louis are very sorry they ever quit Geher and Son[.] [T]hey have hardly worked since.
(Tue. P.M. Jan 28/19) We were all sadly disappointed today. [T]he letter did not come as we expected. Aunt Addie is over today to cook soap. I do not know if I told you that Papa has finally gotten help, the cutest little colored boy almost too small but very willing. They were amused at him the other day. [H]is brother came to see him and they went to the room and had a game of cards without saying a word. Mr. Lee Zimlich had helped Papa get his potatoes to town. [W]orked for about a week but has now gone in the milk business.
Wed. Jan 29/19
The girls had an awfully hard time getting the tickets for Saturday night. [T]he Daughters of Isabella had charge of it and of course the Daughters all wanted them. None of us are members. Uncle Frank finally got two cards from a Mrs. Arbegust which entitled them to admission. It was a sandwich dance. [E]very girl had to bring a box with two sandwiches and anything else she wanted to put in it, tied with red and yellow ribbon. [T]hey stacked all these boxes on a table and had a grand march. [A]s the boys passed they took a box, the girls had their names on them and they then looked for the girl[,] ate with her and danced the next set together. Later in the evening they had a night cap dance[.] [E]ach boy was given a lit candle, all lights were turned out and the girls went out of the hall. [T]hen they came in with the paper night cap[s] and tied them on the boys who were sitting on the floor with their candle[s]. [Q]uite novel was it not? There was a mob there as usual. Willie went in to get them and the Traubs, and he said the women were standing on the radiators in the back of the hall to see over the crowd. John and Mary Shelley were there too, Amos and Dina, Alexina, Margaret Brown and others.
Sunday we had another beautiful day. Papa, Cecelia and Mary F. went to vespers[.] [A]fterwards they took Joe Karcher along and went for a ride out as far as Jacob Park, then out the Bardstown Road. I had to go to town on the five o'clock car to First & Walnut. Aunt Maggie had Father Simms and another of the priests down to supper and wanted me to help. [S]he had a very nice supper. It was Uncle Frank's 60th birthday, but do not tell anybody, he is afraid the girls will not look at him if they hear he is that old.
Monday night Cecelia and I went to the Presentation Academy to a musical entertainment of the St Helena Club. [W]e sat with Pauline and Mary Senn and and Marie Taylor. The Senns are not wearing mourning for their Mother. Willie and Uncle Frank went out on Sixth St. to pray the rosary for Tommy Clines mother who died on Sunday. They came by and got us afterwards.
Cap't Geher stopped in to see us yesterday. [H]e expects to be here a couple of months. Last night we entertained our Aunt Adeline. Joe Kurzendorfer had an accident this morning. [H]e put up a gas range on Williams St. lit the oven to try it, must have had the valve turned on because it blew out and burned his face badly. He has more trouble of all kinds, always something happening. [H]as as much trouble with his Ford machine as he had with the Commerce. I saw Tom Discher at noon. [H]e inquired for you as usual. I also met Mrs. Geher. [S]he is going to leave on the 5th for another visit to St. Paul, Minn. [T]hose army people do travel around enough.
I do not know how you will like the pictures. You know our scenery and backgrounds are not very good in the winter. Cecelia has gone to her club at Pikes this afternoon in the Highlands. Elsie Harpring has not been at all well the last few weeks. [W]e had given the girls two tickets for last Saturday afternoon but they could not go. Mr. & Mrs. Rudolph Harpring have a baby. She is at Sts. M & E Hospital. Rud is at some little country town.
Nearly six, so I will have to close hoping that we soon get a letter.
I remain Yours lovingly
Clara

Dearest Nellie -
Received your letter this evening just at supper time so will answer right off. I went on duty at noon and will be on duty until noon tomorrow then I will write another letter. am going to write every day now until I find out where I go after Sat., as we leave here then and I don't know where we will go, but oh how I wish I could come home for a few days for I have lots to tell you when I get to see you.
Your package came O.K. and I thank you very much for the Testament. you don't know how much those books are needed down here. you are doing more for me than you have any idea you are. thots of you would keep any man from going wrong and as God is my helper I will come back to you a better boy than when I left. watch and be patient and the time will come when I will once more be at you door to receive my welcome.
No I can't say that any one of the boys is my special friend, but all seem to share the joy of one another and make this life just as enjoyable as possible. no I can't say that I like it down here, but it is not so bad as I expected. when I am on duty I don't have time to get lonesome but when I am not busy and get to studying about you then is when my heart yearns for home.
No I have not been over to see Mrs Klotter yet as I will have to have a pass when I do and I have not been able to get one yet. but after Sat., I am going to try and see her. I thot at first maybe it was some one who wanted to play with me to see if I was fool enough to come but if you say she is O.K. why I will go. I am keeping the letter and will bring it home so that you can see what she wrote. it is a kind invitation, and as she signed her name Minnie Klotter I thot it was a miss so you know why I was shy.
If you want those two pictures keep them for your self as H & A don't care enough about me to want one of them. Alice thot they were good and like to have blowed up when they left Sunday, but Pa did not act like he did when I left the first time, but he worries for fear I will have to go across. but I don't think I will but you can never tell.
Well Mrs Hillig doesn't appreciate a good turn when she gets it as that was once when they did not have to hand out any money. besides your dad fixed their buggy for them, but the more you do for them the more you can do.
It seems hard to be down here but think what it would mean for me to be at home and all the rest gone. it would hurt just as bad then as every one would look on one as a slacker.
The paper today said that the French, British and Yanks were still advancing and that some prisoners they had taken said that Germany would soon have to fall. I don't care how soon I want a stop put to this waste of human lives and property.
It is a great deal cooler here now as it rained all night and all day today and looks favorably for tomorrow.
I don't know whether Pa got home O.K. or not but I expect a letter any time now telling me how they made the trip, but they acted like they were awful tired. they said the road was awful rough altho it only took about four hours to come.
The letter you sent in the paper are good. I am glad that Martin got to be a Seargant [sic] but suppose he will be so big when he comes back that he won't notice we folks.
No I don't have to drill and have not drilled any since I came to this kitchen but I have not forgot all what I learned the first two weeks and will show you what it was when I get home. all I do is what there is to be done in the kitchen. but I would have started to school I would have drilled.
Now when you write don't write if you think I won't get your letter Friday evening or Sat. noon as the Candidates will leave Sat. noon and we will stay and help clean up and I don't want any mail left in the office.
Will quit and go bathe but will write again tomorrow evening.
Yours as ever
with love
Frank

Letter addressed to Corp. Louis J. Discher, Co F 120 Infantry, Camp Sevier, S.C.
Sat. P.M.
April 27 /18
Dear Brother:
We surely enjoyed your nice long letter received yesterday. [G]lad to hear you will get to Asheville N.C. I do not think that was such an imperfect day last Sunday, but see how nice it would have been if the elderly man would have taken you all home to spend the evening and take supper with him.
Aunt Lou's seemed to be very much pleased with you letter. I believe you are going to get a cake. I am returning the pink letter so you can answer it. We will send you some money because I heard today that Joe Heintzman has not been paid since January. So keep some for over there.
Well we are going to have Chaplains Mahoney and Grasshoff, Secretary Kelly and some other soldier for supper tomorrow night. Fraas has been transferred to some other camp, leaving today. Watson tells me Will Bohan is slightly disappointed. [H]e enlisted to get into the motor division and he was put in the gun division although he has been made Seargant [sic]. [T]hey are staying at a hotel and go out every morning to ammunition plants, garages or whatever branch they have been put in. Hours from six to eight. Five hundred applicants for the motor division and they only wanted ninety men.
We met Walter Diemer last night on the car but just had time to ask how he felt. [H]e said he is allright again and to tell you Hello for him. Mary Emma said Joe Heheman is still in the Depot Brigade. Father Rothheut enquired for you last night. [F]irst time since you have gone, but very likely he did not know you had left Camp T. [H]e sent me a soldier census card to fill out for you on Thursday. I asked him last night if it was for a service flag but he said he has to send them on to Washington. [T]hey get the Catholic percentage in that way. I thought you might send him a card some time. Cecelia says not, but do as you please about it.
As it is nearly six I will have to close. You might see me in Greenville yet.
With love from
Clara

Dearest -
Will write you a few lines altho I hardily [sic] know what[.] I wrote one Saturday but I expect you will get the two together, as I did not get to mail it until yesterday.
Well I don't know whether I will get home this week or not, but I hope so. the candidates will be examined today and will leave Thurs or Friday so it is likely we will too, but don't look to[o] strong for me as I don't want to disappoint you. I am alright with the exception of a cold but think it will be alright soon, so don't worry.
It seems as if the discharging is awfully slow - but Col. Carter got word from Washington to get we men out of here this week so they are working day and night.
It is cold down here of nights and I hope I will be home before it gets any colder.
I will have a lot to tell you when I see you, some thing to make you laugh as well as something else.
Well this finishes my tablet so what I have to say I will have to cut short.
The men who are going home can hardily [sic] hold them selves and I presume that they won't stay much longer without a disturbance.
I want to go this week so bad that I can hardily stand it and no one can blame me when they know why.
If the war was still on I would not say much but now it is over and I want to come home.
Bye Bye till we meet,
With love
Smak
Frank

Letter addressed to Corp. Louis J. Discher, Co F 120 Infantry, Camp Sevier, S.C.
Fri. P.M.
April 26 / 18
Dear Louis:
Uncle Frank received your letter this morning and they got one out home. I was so sorry to hear about all that quarantine business because I was trying to induce Aunt Maggie to take me to Greenville next week. I though we could have left here in the middle of the week and stay over Saturday and Sunday with you. You see Aunt Maggie has promised me a trip this summer. [B]ut I am afraid that if Ed goes to camp, there will be no vacation for me unless I would go early and of course I would love to see my little brother before he sails so maybe she might take me to New York.
Do you know Rudolph Harpring really does have to go to camp Monday. Laura told Mary F. that Angela will not break up for a few months because so many married men have been discharged after being out at camp two or three months. Clara Graf told us at the Euchre the other night that Harold has to bring his own blanket, underclothes, socks, etc.
I was just talking to Tode and she says Marie Bannon and Lieut Curran are to be married at the Base Hospital. She was also telling me that Fount's sister and the baby are not so well and they have not heard lately from Dr Beale which of course is distressing her greatly. You had better not tell Fount (the above news). [I]f he does not leave with you Louis, let him telegraph C.O.D. to us when you leave Camp Sevier so we do not send any mail there.
Louis Heintzman was telling me that Joe has never received any of their mail so when you get to France, let us know the correct way to reach you.
Enclosed find your Liberty Loan Dollar. How did the cake reach you ? Did it taste good? As I want to catch the 5:50 I must say goodbye
Clara
