My dear Louis,
When I got home from the office yesterday I found your dear sweet letter waiting for me. I was so glad to know that my letters reached you at such an opportune time. I hope that this one will do likewise. Last night I called up Clara & told her I had heard from you. I read the whole letter to her except that part where you asked me not to tell any one. I skipped over that part & read it as if I had nothing left out.
Louis I am terribly anxious to hear from you telling me about you being wounded. Clara showed me the Cablegram & my heart almost stopped beating. I was so shocked I could hardly speak. I was however glad to know that it was a slight wound. I know that you get the best attention and will be alright in a short while. Write me Louis, please & tell me all you can.
I bet that was some fight on the Western Front and I know that “Our Boys” especially (one) & that is you Louis, deserve all the praise & even more than they get. I hope that Germany will accept Wilson's peace terms & that you will soon be homeward bound. That sounds good doesn't it Louis? I hope & pray that it will soon come true & I know you do.
Mother & Mary are just fine & they certainly appreciated your thoughtfulness in remembering them. It sure is sweet of you Louis.
John is still at Camp Taylor & has put in an application for the Officer's Training Camp. I do hope he gets in & gets a commission.
Well Louis I will never stop praying for you & please write & tell me all about yourself.
Yours with love,
Dorothy

Dearest Nellie -
Well I will write an answer to your letters which I received today. they were written on Nov. 8 & 10 so you see they were on the way a good while but I got them just the same.
We just heard this evening that we will be transferred tomorrow morning and will be ready in a few days to come home so they say but I am going to wait until I get my papers so you must wait with patience as I know you will. I am trying too but it is very near more than I can do.
I also got a letter from my beloved sister-in-law Ruth. so you will get to read it when I come home if you want to.
As to that cake I sent[,] you can do as you please. but I sent it to you to eat but you know best and can use it as a [word indecipherable].
The boys are leaving every day in large numbers so we will soon know what they are going to do with us. I will let you know just as soon as I know as we will find out about two or three days before.
I suppose the load of furniture is all paid for as every thing else is see.
I hope that when I come home some one will say something about Duncans I want to tell them something that they won't forget, as you know that I am wearing U.S. uniform and they can't insult that, and as to making Mr. Duncan pay for that transportation that is all a fraud[.] the Government pays all charges and if I was Mr. Duncan I would write the Government headquarters about it.
When this reaches you I hope to know when I am coming home.
Your soldier boy, With love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Well I will try and write you a few lines now as I have some time. I got back from Burnside last night and reported to Lieut. Longnecker then had to move all my stuff over to the 32nd Battery as the 33 is all busted up and we are waiting now for our papers.
Louis Maxie was one of our K.P.s and when he died I was asked to take his body home, and I could not refuse as he was a friend of mine. I started on Sunday morning at 7-10 and arrived in Danville [Kentucky] at 11-30 changed cars and landed in Burnside 2-30. his father and two sons met me and they had no undertaker or hearse so I called for the marshell [sic] and turned the body over to him. then we went over to the house and had the papers signed showing that they had received the body. then as I had a headache went to the hotel (Seven Gabels) [sic] and went to bed about 5 oclock.
That was the saddest family I ever saw and it was almost to[o] much for me and I hope I don't have to take another body home.
Well we go on shift at noon and perhaps we will be changed any time and I hope that I will get home soon.
I got your letter that you wrote Nov. 26 and say I was tickled half to death as I was not expecting it. but I will write when ever I get a chance so do not worry because I will be home some time before long.
This is brown paper but not the kind Charley Baker uses so you do not have to be afraid ha! ha!
Well I am going to write Pa a letter so I will bring this to an end.
Bye Bye dear heart for a little while

Dearest Nellie -
Received your welcome letter at noon today, while eating my Thanksgiving dinner. it was some dinner. consisted of the following. Turkey, cranberry Sauce, dressing, cream peas, sweet potatoes, bananas, celery, apples and gravey [sic]. it was the best dinner we have had since I have been in camp, but it was not [as] it would have been at home, where I expect to be before long.
The candidates who get their discharges will leave Saturday and the ones who remain will be transferred to Battery 32 just across the road. then we will either be sent back to our former company or be discharged from here. but if we go back to the Depot Brigade we will be discharged from there.
Oh! I can hardily [sic] wait till I get home and to you. rabbit hunting and all like we did once before. ha! ha!
Well we just got out of quarentine [sic] at noon today and can go down to Coke Station once more and see the leg show ha! ha! as that is all it is. but wait until I get home I will make you laugh, or I will die trying.
I am sorry to hear that the Flu is raging again but guess it is the luck of the neighborhood to have something wrong most of the time. You never said whether you got my letter with my picture in it or not. but no matter I have some left.
Well if you want to write you must write at once or I may be out of here before it reaches me.
You must excuse this paper as it is the best I could do, and I had to borrow it.
hoping to be with you soon I am as ever your loved one

Dearest -
Will write you a few lines altho I hardily [sic] know what[.] I wrote one Saturday but I expect you will get the two together, as I did not get to mail it until yesterday.
Well I don't know whether I will get home this week or not, but I hope so. the candidates will be examined today and will leave Thurs or Friday so it is likely we will too, but don't look to[o] strong for me as I don't want to disappoint you. I am alright with the exception of a cold but think it will be alright soon, so don't worry.
It seems as if the discharging is awfully slow - but Col. Carter got word from Washington to get we men out of here this week so they are working day and night.
It is cold down here of nights and I hope I will be home before it gets any colder.
I will have a lot to tell you when I see you, some thing to make you laugh as well as something else.
Well this finishes my tablet so what I have to say I will have to cut short.
The men who are going home can hardily [sic] hold them selves and I presume that they won't stay much longer without a disturbance.
I want to go this week so bad that I can hardily stand it and no one can blame me when they know why.
If the war was still on I would not say much but now it is over and I want to come home.
Bye Bye till we meet,
With love
Smak
Frank

Dearest -
Thursday afternoon and it is still cloudy and cool. seems as if it will not clear up again. gee I would like to see it clear up.
I am O.K. and have been working hard when on my shift. have my clothes washed ready to start home when I get my discharge but don't know just when that will be.
They are discharging men every day and we expect it soon so get ready for a big time when I land in Ind.
I was lucky enough to get to see the Republican [Versailles, Ind. newspaper] over at the Y. it was Nov 13 so I got many of the latest news. saw who all was sick and who had died[.] it certainly was some death list.
I suppose Charley Duncan and Martin will soon be coming home. I hope so at least.
I want you to be ready to sew my insignas [sic] on my coat sleeves when I get home as you know I am a cook and will get to keep my uniform 4 months.
There is a little girl I am longing to see and I hope it won't be long until I am there as that is where I will land unless I am sick when I get off at Osgood.
Hoping to see you soon dear little ---- [sic] I am as ever your -----------

Dearest Nellie -
The reason I am using this paper is because it was to[o] cold in the barricks [sic] so I came over here. [The Y.M.C.A.]
I am feeling O.K. and still living in hopes of getting home soon.
It has been raining and snowing ever since Saturday so you know it is very disagreeable to every one as we had been having such nice weather.
We are expecting our discharge any day now and when I get mine for home and you. I only wish that all who left home might be able to come back, but that can not be so we must make the best of it and hope that there will never be another cause to cause us to leave the loved ones at home.
You must [not] write any more unless you trust that your letters either reach me or are returned and it is possible that they will not be returned as the men have to[o] much work to do. so I will do all the writing and trust that you are O.K. but if any thing happens to you you can telegraph me just as quick.
The boys are going and coming just the same as ever, as there was no word about the peace. but believe me when ever the day comes when we can start home there will be something doing.
I hope we get away from here before winter sets in as it won't be very nice down here when it snows and blows. not nearly so nice as it will be by the stove in our room. ha! ha!
We can tell a few things when we come back that will make the boys who stayed at home blush. I am certainly glad that I was not one of them who stayed. it is sur[e]ly worth the price I have paid to have had this experience of four months training.
It certainly will snow as the clouds are hanging low in the sky and it is awfully dark.
hoping to be with you soon I am yours

Dearest Nellie -
Thursday morning and will write you a few lines and tell you some news.
I am feeling O.K. and expect to come home soon. they are discharging men every where and all the time, and the papers say that any one who asks for a discharge will get it, as they can not hold men against their will, and I sure want to get back to help cut the winters wood and get the corn in. the farmer boys and the ones who are married will get home first so I am told.
I got my pictures last night and will send one if I can get it in the envelope and if I can't I will bring it when I come. I think they are real good for the form of which they were taken. ha! ha!
I have a lot to tell you when I get home and I can hardily [sic] wait until I get there. tell you Pa to file the saws and get every thing in shape so we can make things hum.
I got my pay yesterday. $46.20/100 think I will send $40 home so watch the mail. I have not heard from McClure yet so don't know what to do about my Dr. Bill. I can't get any thing until he sends in his bill.
After the middle of next week don't write me any more until you hear from me as I may be on my way home and then I would miss my letter and always put return on the envelope.
hoping to hear or see you soon I am as every yours to love
Your soldier, ^intended^ h---d

Dearest Nellie -
This evening will write you a few lines and then mail it as I go over to the movies at the Y.
This finds me able to smoke my cigar as you know that I am tolerbly [sic] well. altho of mornings I am so weak I can hardily [sic] go. I am still taking medicine that the Camp Dr. gave me. I wrote Dr McClure a letter but did not hear from him yet. you might call him and give him my address if you will, please.
I was at Louisville last night and the crowd oh! my! you could hardily [sic] get along there was so many people out. They shoved right and left and on Walnut street they got me up against a plate window. I thot it was going to break and you aught [sic] to have seen me crowd my way to the street and after that I soon came back to camp. the town was full of drunks altho they were all civillians [sic].
All of the Artillery Area praded peraraded [sic] at the training field on Hess Lane today[.] it was so far away that we could not see from here what it was like but I know it was great.
When the war is over and I hold you again in my arms I will be happy oh! so happy and I look forward to that day from day to day with a longing no one can describe.
Yours until death do us part.

Postmarked Monday, November 11, 1918.

[Monday] November 11, 1918
Dearest Nellie -
Tis with a smile that I write you this letter as the news here are that all men who have not finished their training will be discharged and sent home at once. this surely means me as I have not finished. And again they say that they are going to send us, Ritchie and I to school at the Cooks & Bakers but I think this will be only to have an orginazation [sic] so as to discharge us cooks. But if all things are true we will be home soon.
I was at Coke's Station this evening and the streets were lined with trucks and automobiles loaded with people blowing horns rainging [sic] bells and you could hardily [sic] hear anything for them.
When your soldier boy comes marching home we will sureley have some time[.] I don't intend to work until I have had my welcome worn out with you. ha! ha!
I have been inquiring about my mail every where but as yet I have not heard any thing. but hope to get the next ones directed to this battery.
Was at the show in Coke last night will tell you about it when I see you.
Yours with Love,
Frank R. Lane

Dearest Nellie -
I just found out that the Y. was not allowed to receive any more mail so I suppose that my mail is either at the post office for this area or has been returned to you. so when you write now please send it to the above address and may be I will get a few letters.
I was taken off the sick list and put on duty again this morning but I don't intend to work much as there is others to work.
I was at Coke Station this morning for a short time just out for exercise. those who were down town last night say that every one was out p[a]rading because of the War News. it sounds as if something was coming[.] hope all new that are good news are true, as I want to come home to stay.
The Kaiser has left his throne and the Crown Prince refuses to take his place so it sounds as if we were getting the best of them al[l]round.
I hope that it won't be many more letter[s] that I will have to write from here, and then I won't leave you any more unless you say so. see. for when I come back I am coming for you. I am going to send you something about wed. [Wednesday?] if noting prevents so watch the mail box and maybe I will have some of your letters by that time.
The Mayor told one of the K of Ps that all of us special duty men would be discharged by the last of this month. gee wouldn't I be glad.
Bye Bye sweetheart until I write again,
With love

Y.M.C.A. No. 152
[Thursday] Nov. 7, 1918
Dearest -
I am going over to the Y. to see if there is any mail from you, but first I am going to write a few lines.
Last night we had a feast fit for a queen and we all had a good time also we got some extra pay for our exertions, and so did the K of Ps as they worked until eleven o'clock so as to get the dishes washed. the package I sent you yesterday evening was a sample of the cake and also some of the paper napkins. I would have sent more but they were all used up before I knew it. You can keep them as a rememberance [sic] of the 6th day of November 1918. Say ^1:30 PM^ but I am happy word just came that Germany had accepted the peace terms and the bells and whistles were making a lot of noise.
oh! I hope it so for I sur[e]ly want to come back to you and home.
I will finish this when I have come back from the Y.
Friday morning Nov. 8. will try to write you a few more lines. oh! sweetheart Nellie are you sick? that you dont write I am worr[y]ing about you it has been more than a week and yet I have not had a line from you.
I went down to see Mrs. Klotter last evening they said they had been worried about me as they had not heard or seen me for so long, but Anna had written that I was home sick. They were tickeled [sic] to see me.
And say! they have t[w]o new babies in their family the d[a]ughter has a boy and the daughter-in-law has a daughter. I wonder if I brought them that luck ha! ha! they are so proud of these new comers.
The Louisville people tried to tear up things yesterday when the good news came and they were just wild last night. say I will be coming home some of these days and then home and you.
I am going over to see about my money as they say I can't get it until Dec.! and I am going to hallo & whop, and raise h--l in general because I was home sick and could not sign the pay rool [sic] in October, but I did in September.
This to one I love
I am your as ever

Dearest -
Just received you letter of the 23rd and I sure was glad to get it. I began to think you were sick and could not write it had been two long weeks since I saw or heard from you. you never said why you did not write sooner.
Well I had to report back to my Company this afternoon and I am now transferred to the Artillery Kitchens and as far as I know will stay where I am, altho there is some prospect of going to West Point. I am going to try and come home a few days when I find out what they intend to do with me, so you can watch the road.
I saw one man laid out this morning just back of our kitchen. a heavy[-]loaded truck started to pull the hill and could not make it, and while they were backing down (the brakes would not hold) they landed the back end in the big ditch and one man who was riding on the back was thrown under the boxes and was carried to the Hospital unconscious, but is getting along O.K. now.
I had a letter from home yesterday but they did not write much. said they had a letter from Alice and they had bought a farm.
Wonder who put that in the paper. some one making fun I guess ha! ha! but it was some send off was it not.
If I can get my check cashed tonight I will send some home so watch the mail and when you write always put return on the envelopes so that if I did not happen to get it, you would.
I broke my ring this morning while getting some ice out of the box and guess I will send it home[.] I don't want to destroy it altogether, and we have such heavy work it is to[o] much for a light ring.
I only hope and pray that they don't send me any farther away than I am for now I have a chance to come home but if I get farther away I may not.
I have written every other day since I was home and I can't understand why you don't get my letters, and then I only had one for all those[.] I will make you talk you head off when I see you. ha! ha!
Hoping to hear real soon
I am yours forever

Dearest Nellie -
Received your letter this evening just at supper time so will answer right off. I went on duty at noon and will be on duty until noon tomorrow then I will write another letter. am going to write every day now until I find out where I go after Sat., as we leave here then and I don't know where we will go, but oh how I wish I could come home for a few days for I have lots to tell you when I get to see you.
Your package came O.K. and I thank you very much for the Testament. you don't know how much those books are needed down here. you are doing more for me than you have any idea you are. thots of you would keep any man from going wrong and as God is my helper I will come back to you a better boy than when I left. watch and be patient and the time will come when I will once more be at you door to receive my welcome.
No I can't say that any one of the boys is my special friend, but all seem to share the joy of one another and make this life just as enjoyable as possible. no I can't say that I like it down here, but it is not so bad as I expected. when I am on duty I don't have time to get lonesome but when I am not busy and get to studying about you then is when my heart yearns for home.
No I have not been over to see Mrs Klotter yet as I will have to have a pass when I do and I have not been able to get one yet. but after Sat., I am going to try and see her. I thot at first maybe it was some one who wanted to play with me to see if I was fool enough to come but if you say she is O.K. why I will go. I am keeping the letter and will bring it home so that you can see what she wrote. it is a kind invitation, and as she signed her name Minnie Klotter I thot it was a miss so you know why I was shy.
If you want those two pictures keep them for your self as H & A don't care enough about me to want one of them. Alice thot they were good and like to have blowed up when they left Sunday, but Pa did not act like he did when I left the first time, but he worries for fear I will have to go across. but I don't think I will but you can never tell.
Well Mrs Hillig doesn't appreciate a good turn when she gets it as that was once when they did not have to hand out any money. besides your dad fixed their buggy for them, but the more you do for them the more you can do.
It seems hard to be down here but think what it would mean for me to be at home and all the rest gone. it would hurt just as bad then as every one would look on one as a slacker.
The paper today said that the French, British and Yanks were still advancing and that some prisoners they had taken said that Germany would soon have to fall. I don't care how soon I want a stop put to this waste of human lives and property.
It is a great deal cooler here now as it rained all night and all day today and looks favorably for tomorrow.
I don't know whether Pa got home O.K. or not but I expect a letter any time now telling me how they made the trip, but they acted like they were awful tired. they said the road was awful rough altho it only took about four hours to come.
The letter you sent in the paper are good. I am glad that Martin got to be a Seargant [sic] but suppose he will be so big when he comes back that he won't notice we folks.
No I don't have to drill and have not drilled any since I came to this kitchen but I have not forgot all what I learned the first two weeks and will show you what it was when I get home. all I do is what there is to be done in the kitchen. but I would have started to school I would have drilled.
Now when you write don't write if you think I won't get your letter Friday evening or Sat. noon as the Candidates will leave Sat. noon and we will stay and help clean up and I don't want any mail left in the office.
Will quit and go bathe but will write again tomorrow evening.
Yours as ever
with love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Will write you a few lines and if they come out as they should you will get this Monday. I was again disappointed[.] I wanted to go over to Coke Station but I did not get a pass. oh well such is life in the army.
Received your letter yesterday and am sorry that my people did not ask you to come along, altho as yet they have not been here but may be they will come tomorrow.
Tomorrow we go out to camp just across the road from here[.] it is not very far[.] it is just to get a sight of how to do cooking in the line.
We got word this morning that we will leave this place Sat. next or Sunday, and I don't know what they will do with us as we will get our orders later. perhaps if we have every thing in tip top shape we might get a furlough oh! how I wish we would.
Alice had told me about your father's accident - but I forgot to mention it when I wrote. I hope he is better now.
You can call up Nell and tell her not to write after Wednesday or so that I can get the letters by Friday evening because we might leave and then I would not get my mail. so if you see any one who intends to write tell them to write so I get it by Friday. see as I don't want to miss any mail as that is what keeps a fellow alive down here.
You must not let any one read this letter as I am going to write some that a few must not read.
All I have to say is that if Henry don't think enough of you to bring you down to see me he does not think of any thing but his old money and some day he will find out that it is not all, and he might have to come to war too if they pass that law, and then when he is here he may want some one to come and see him.
If they take all the boys from home the girls will be just as bad off as the hens when you kill the roosters ha! ha! but I hope that it is not so for I believe that we will have won before long then the welcome the boys will get when they come home. it wont be the slacker who stays around home and loves the girls while we are gone. Oh, it makes me quiver when I think how some girls do, have a lover and then just as soon as he is gone allow any Tom Dick, or Harry to go.
I think you did fine with your letters as I have received at least two a week since I have got my address straightened out. But the more the merrier. The cigars are O.K. I have smoked two of them and will try another after while. I have not given any of them away and will not as they have [been] given to me by you.
The roads are crowded with machines again today and I suppose they will be tomorrow but no one that I know.
Now don't forget if to [sic] tell any one you see who is going to write tell them what I said and I will write when I find out where we are going.
Hoping to hear from you soon,
I remain yours, with love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Again will write you a few lines as I am again at liberty[.] Just went over to the Y.M.C.A. and got some envelopes so that I could send you one of my pictures. they are not extra yet you can see partially how I look in uniform. Had these taken yesterday morning at Coke Station just across the track from w[h]ere we were at first. Am going to send two and you can take your pick and if you don't want both you can give one to Anna & Henry.
Oh! I just received a letter from Louisville Kentucky and you will be surprised just as I was to learn who it was from. Well it was from John Klotters cousin Minnie Klotter and she said that John wrote her I was here, and as she was a friend to every soldier she invited me to their home at 1827 Preston St., Louisville Ky. Now what do you think of that.
I have looked in vain every day this week for you and some of the rest to ome down but guess I am to be disappointed, but oh how I wish you would come if only for an hour. it would be the happiest moment of my life. I received my harp, soap, prunes, cigars, and gum, also the Grit paper, for which I thank you very much. they were all in good shape.
Last night the students had some work to do and did it here where we sleep and of course we got no sleep while they were here and that was about 12 oclock, and this morning I was so sleepy I could hardily [sic] go[.] hope it doesn't happen very often.
It is not so cool today altho it is not hot[.] last night it was cool enough to sleep under the blanket but it won't be very long until we can use our covers all the time.
I wrote Pa & Nell a letter yesterday and suppose by now that they have read them and are ready for another.
When I come home I will make some corn bread for dinner and some hamberger [sic] as I made for supper last night also some orangeade then you can see how I can cook ha! ha! then perhaps you will milk and feed the chickens while I get breakfast see.
Have Carl & Gusta married yet [?] I have heard no one mention them yet altho there is a fellow by name Liggett in this battery.
I suppose you folks have been digging potatoes for some time and are they much good [?] but I guess not as it has been to[o] dry. we certainly use lots of potatoes down here about 50 lbs at a time. we had mashed potatoes chocklate [sic] pudding, dressing, roast beef, gravy, green beans, tomatoes, and ice tea for dinner so you see we have plenty to eat.
That money that you got for those snaps you take that to use at Sunday School and when you put in a nickel put one in for me and if you don't want to do [it] that way use it yourself as I would use it for you if I were there. Oh Nellie you know what my greatest desire was and is and if it can be brought about any way that is right I would that it could be done, because I surely deserve to have a few happy moments in my life so if I come home we can try to bring this about now can't we. I believe you are willing[.] you talked that way once and I believe you. you don't know how your name in my thots helps me[.] it would make any one shun temp[ta]tions if any thing would and we have all kinds here and at all times.
You may think me foolish for writing this but change places with me and see what you would do.
All for this time
Yours with love
Frank

[Circa August 20]
Dear Nellie -
Again I am off duty and have just come back from Cokes Station where I had my hair cut and you just can't guess by who. well I will tell you it was a married woman[.] she barbered me while her man did some one else. you will have to come down here and start a barber shop then you can cut my hair to suit. see ha! ha! and you could love any one of the boys who came in. ha! ha! not.
I got my watch to-day and it is O.K. and thank you very much for the fob. it is O.K. sure enough I am going to send you a little present[.] it was the best I could find but if you don't like it to wear lay it aside. will send you a picture when I have them taken, as I had my money order cashed today, but I did not have my coat on so I could not have it taken otherwise, as the coat is what puts the finishing touch on.
It is nice and cool here where I am writing but when I was outside it was hot and I sweat just like I was in the harvest field.
am looking for Alice & you any day now and I don't want to be disappointed, as I have had to[o] many disappointments now.
Well I did a big washing today washed three towels and undershirt and an union suit but have not done any ironing yet and you know that we dont do any down here until we get them on. ha! ha! and they look like S.t. (oh look out now quaker.)
I have not started to school yet and don't know when I will but suppose they will let me know when they get ready for me.
I cant think of much to write today but perhaps I can think of something else after a while. I am going to take this over to the Y.M.C.A. and send it when I mail your Service Pin so that they will come about the same time. wish I had my pictures now so you could see how I look. I sure feel good but don't get much heavier and don't think I will yet a while. I sure eat plenty but have not been able to eat as much as 14 [Sic. Probably meant 4. Could also be read as 1 1/2 ] pieces of pie altho we had apple cobbler today for dinner, and tomorrow we are going to have Indian Pudding for dinner.
I am also going to send a slip I cut out of the Louisville Paper and see if you read it in the Republican.
I have been writting [sic] letters for a fellow who can't write his name is Earnest Minor from the Hills of Kentuck. he is a good fellow but as green as [word indecipherable]. now don't let any one see this letter because they might think that the Army hadn't helped me much toward bettering my character.
Well sweetheart I just received you letter you wrote Aug 18. it sure was some letter. no I don't think Ann is mad as I had a letter from her it was written Aug 7 and I got it about the 14th so you see it did not come straight to me.
Well if it would have been any one else but Ruth [Ligget] & Noel [Lane, his brother] Liggets would talk their old head off about it. I don't care how much they stay together just so they let you alone, but they must not step on your toes as that make[s] my Irish dander arise.
You asked what I did. Well we get up at half past 3 in the morning when I am on duty help get breakfast then serve it, and just as soon as breakfast if over we get the table ready and scrub it with Dutchs then dry it good, also scrub the floor, clean out the ice box, also the storeroom and the bread box. the[n] the meat comes and if beef we have a meat class, for instance if a hind quarter, we say the first thing to do is to cut off all the fat then seperate [sic] the Loin and flank from rump, round and shank, then the round from the shank, next the flank from the loin then it is hung in the ice box, so you see we have some little to do. now it is time to get dinner and we proceed to put on potatoes, beans make corn bread, or what ever is to be done. we have inspection every morning so we have to have every thing ready by nine oclock.
Then when I am not on duty I wash clothes write letters attend the meat class, or go over to the Y.M.C.A. and walk around some so that I got some out door exercise, because to[o] much indoors is not good for me.
Perhaps Octave will get to serve Uncle Sam yet if they keep on I hope so at least altho I don't want to wish any one any bad luck.
No I have not seen Agnes and I don't care to as she is not to my suiting altho any one from home would look good if only a curdog.
Well I havn't [sic] been over to see Mr. Boldery and I don't think I can as it is quite a ways from here.
My God kid I can [not] bear to think of you in camp as a nurse and whatever you do think of your care at home first you are needed there and perhaps I can see you once in a while [if] you are at home but if you get in the Nurse Corpse why I may never, and that is not all[.] you can do your bit at home better than here.
What was the matter with the machine went [sic] it would not go was it out of oil or was it just contrary?
Well if Octave is not careful I will have the best record after all when it comes to Sunday School work as the Preacher never called me down once I just despise to have a class act like they did, but I guess they don't know any better.
I certainly do prize every thing that you send as I did when at home if anything more so because it speaks now for you and love but when at home you could speak for yourself. When you are away it only makes ones love come out stronger and I can think of nothing else but you, and that will keep me as God is my helper.
Wishing you luck I remain as ever yours with all Love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Will write again altho I almost feel as if I ought not as I have not had an answer since about Tuesday or Wednesday at the most. but guess you were to[o] busy but could you not write just a few lines at least twice a week. Oh, kid you don't know how I enjoy those letters. if you knew what we have to contend with [by] the way of tempt[at]ions you would be shocked to the utmost. they [are] such as I can hardily [sic] name, but just a few are vice, swearing, and vulgar talking. these are the most we have here. the boys go to town at least once a week, but I have not yet and that is not all. as long as you still love me rest assured that if I go to town I will come back just as much a man as I was when I went. I may have not always been O.K. but since you have come into my life I have been different and will continue to do so from now on[.] some of the books we read here give us a lecture on the tempt[at]ions that we should shun and why. So remember that when I come back to you I will be just as good as when I left, so help me God.
We are to have an inspection by an officer from Washington this morning and so we are trying to clean up. I will go back on duty at noon and then tomorrow afternoon I am going over to see if my Co. is still where they were.
I heard that Talcum powder would take dandruff out of your hair and would also keep your hair from coming out and would make it grow in again. I am going to try it when I come home.
Well I have to go wash some duds so I guess I had better bring this to a close. you see we have no special wash day down here, just wash when we have time so this [is] my time and I always try to keep my clothes clean.
Write soon as you can and believe me always as yours to command
With love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Just received your box of candy apples, bananas and writing material, so will write you a few lines. got your letter which you wrote the 11th this morning but I did not get the box till evening.
Well I will keep both tablets as the fellow who wanted the other one is over in the 29th Co. across the railroad and I am not going to carry it to him.
I am sorry that it has been so hot there you are loosing [sic] all your tomatoes, but we can't understand every thing.
The reason I don't start to school is because they have a system just like the Moores Hill College and we will have to go two months before we have completed our studies, then we are graduates[.] we will get to be Chef or Mess Seargent [sic] who gets $60 [per month] and that is what I want. so if I get to be a graduate cook I am going to come home for a while if I can and you can prepare to get ready to take part of my wages after that. I don't expect to get a furlough now until I am thru school.
Well the months will soon go by if we are kept busy all the time, as we have been in the past few days. when I am off duty, I get to sweep the squad room and go over to the Y.M.C.A. and write letters so you see my time is well spent. Just as soon as I get my money [I] am going to town long enough to get my pictures taken and if they are good I may send you one of them.
I expect to go to the place where I moved from Sunday afternoon to see if any one is there from up around home as they are coming in from all over the U.S.
I have not read my [word indecipherable] yet but tomorrow after noon will have some time and while I rest I will read them.
Well I have to get up about half past three in the morning so will quit for the time.
As ever yours with love
Frank
