Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Tuesday, September 3, 1918.

25 Battery F.A.C.O.T.S. Camp Taylor, Kentucky [Monday] Sept 2, 1918

Sweetheart - Just before I start to work again, I will write you a few lines, so that you will know where my thots are. Well yesterday for dinner, we had chicken, mashed potatoes, celery, gravy and ice cream. so you see we had quite a dinner. I got my courtesy card so now I can get a pass I guess, so will try to go visiting, also am going to ask the mess Sergeant to try to get me a furlough for two weeks from today as we will be changed from here. I did not ask to come home yesterday as I could not have gotten off. They are changing Kitchen Police, and cooks here all the time some coming in and some going out but I guess we will stay here for a while at least. I understand I was put down as a second cook here but am not sure. oh! yes. I am getting on fast. You see we have first cook, second cook, and then the helpers some two or three. Two of our cooks went to West Point to cook for the Officers so you see they are some cooks. one has cooked for training camps before and the other one has cooked in the lumber camps of Wis. I exchanged one pair of pants this morning so now I have a fairly good looking suit. so if I get to come home I will look half way descent [sic]. I saw a great many people coming and going yesterday but none that I knew. so the Camp was and is as lonesome as ever. When you write be sure to put return to you address on every letter as you have done so that if I don't get them they will be returned to you. also put the address on the envelope that I wrote at the end of my letter which I wrote the 1st of Sept. Two hundred and two negroes were sent across yesterday. they were all six foot and husky. only one short man among them and he was a drummer. they will sure make the foe set up and take notice. Will Bateman is expecting to be transferred soon from Camp Taylor but he does not know where. they sure are seperating [sic] the boys. you don't know where, when or what is to be done with you. I still have some of my tablets you sent me but thot I would get some of this kind and save the tablet until I can't get any Y.M.C.A. paper. I went to a movie last night but it was not like we had at Versailles because it was not so good. will tell you all about it later. Well I will write again tomorrow evening.
Yours with love,
Frank

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Friday, September 6, 1918.

25 Battery F.A.C.O. T S Camp Taylor, Kentucky [Wednesday] September 4, 1918

Sweetheart - Again I will write you a few lines and continue my old story yet will [add] a few new sentences. Went over to Company yesterday evening and ask to come home Sat., but nothing doing. I have to be here four months first then will get the big sum of five days. but I did get a chance to get a pass to town, so if nothing prevents I will go see Mrs Klotter tomorrow evening and if every thing is O.K. perhaps we can arrange so that you can come down there and we can meet because if she is a cousin and a friend of Johns I don't see where it would come amiss, do you? I will write when I get back from there if I get to go and tell you what kind of a time I had and what I saw. It looks kind of hard to see fellows all around you going home and you can't. I guess we will get some pay very soon now as I understood that they would pay off in our company today so as I am in that company I expect some pay. I just finished a letter to Alice Schulte, and when I finish this I am going to write to Pa. I wonder if they have moved yet. I have not heard from them since they were here only thru Ann and she talked of nothing only about me wanting Pa to quit farming. This finds me feeling well and I hope you are well and not worr[y]ing yourself half to death. sometimes when I get to thinking about you it seems as if I could not stand it any longer. yet I guess all will come out right in the end. Well hoping to see you some time before long I am as every yours
With love
Frank

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Saturday, September 14, 1918.
Cook Frank R. Lane 6th Observation Battery F.A.C.O.T.S. Camp Taylor, Ky.
Sept. 13 1918
Dear Sweetheart - Will write you a few lines now. have just finished my work and shaved. I feel tolerbly [sic] well altho my cold is not much better. but my eyes do not bother [me] any more, for which I am glad. This morning the Lieut. came in the kitchen while we were cleaning up and said that the Major had said that we had the cleanest kitchen inside and out in the Camp area. now what do you think of that? and maybe we did not feel good for that coming from the Major is grand. I do not know but I believe that if I could try, that I might get off to come home and help cut the corn as some of the boys got off for 30 days. but I hardily [sic] know what to do as I was just home. but it would be grand if I could. Am going over to the Co and see why I haven't got any pay. it seems to me like we aught [sic] to be getting ours now. it will be 2 months monday, and if I do I am going to send some home to you - for if you are not mine by law you are by love and I don't want any one but you to have any thing from me see. When I think what you were to me those few but happy days I was home it seems that I can do my work with a lighter heart than before, because a whole lot of good was done in those few days[.] they surely were a joyous lot to me. I will ever remember them. I am going to have my hair cut again this evening so that I woun't look so long haired. Have you got our pictures yet and how are they but I know they are O.K. or at least yours are if I did not spoil both. I am going to send you these two pieces of poetry and I wish you would see that one is published in the Rep [“The Versailles Republican” newspaper.] for Roy Hunters and some of the other boys sake[.] I will mark the one I mean. the other you can hand to Mrs. Gloyd to read at the [event name indecipherable] or to some one if you wish but be sure you get it back so you can keep it. Well I will write again tomorrow evening.

Yours with love Frank
S.W.A.K.

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Wednesday, September 18, 1918.
Camp Taylor Kentucky Sept. 18, 1918
Dearest - Tis almost time for me to go in the kitchen but will write first. the men of this battery moved to another building, so this is the 3rd Observation Battery now instead of the 6th so you letters you addressed to the 6th I will get O.K. but address the next you write to the 3rd and maybe you had better not try to write more than once every week as I am liable to change any time. We had no one for supper last night, [or] for breakfast this morning but the cooks and kitchen police and perhaps no more until tomorrow so we have it tolerbly [sic] easy now. Oh! yes four of us went to Louisville took in the Gayety and I am sending you the program. it was just grand. we had a good time and got home about half past twelve. I got my pay this morning for the last week in July and August. so now I won't send home for any more, but just as soon as I get my check chashed [sic] I will send you $10 or more as my check is for $32.10, and I will get another pay next month. I suppose you have our pictures now and do nothing but look at them every time you have a chance. I wish I could get mine soon. they have not come yet, as I have not had a word since I came back down here. We will soon get our winter clothes then perhaps we will get new uniforms that some one can't laugh at. they will be warmer than the ones we now have. I went over to the Y.M.C.A. and got me some writing paper and envelopes so while there I wrote my address and my Lodge so that if any thing should happen they can find me. I thot maybe I could have my mail sent to the Y. but they are not allowed to receive any mail. I am waiting and longing for the day to come when I can come home, to clasp you in my arms and receive those kisses and no one can give but you. if only this cruel war would end what a lot of happy people there would be. Wallace Bupp has never come around yet and as I don't know his address of course I don't know where to find him. Is Dolly at Bupps or at her folks? I suppose when I left every one was glad and talked very different from what they did when I was there.
This finds me yours forever
Cook Frank R. Lane
3rd Observation Battery F.A.C.O.T.S.
Camp Taylor Kentucky
S.W.A.K.

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Sunday, September 22, 1918.
Camp Taylor Kentucky [Saturday] Sept. 21, 1918
Dearest, This Saturday evening and again I will write a few lines. I don't know what to think. I have not had a letter yet, and it nearly drives me mad. so I am going to have my address changed and then no matter where I am while in this camp I will get it. sur[e]ly you have written to me before this or have you been to[o] busy. Well, our bunch of new men came in yesterday evening and we had to get breakfast for them[.] if they had not come until Monday I would have got a five day furlough, but the Captain said as they were here I would be needed so I did not get to come as you see[.] but the first time I can get a 48 hr pass I am coming home to see you. Oh! yes, did I have one of my undershirts there when I was home? I can't find it here. I understand we will not get our winter clothes for some time to come. I wish we could have them now. The sun has been shining today but it was cool for all that. I have not had my check cashed yet but when I do I am going to send you fifteen dollars and then you can keep it until I return. will send what I can spare every month when I get paid, and if any thing should happen to me it will all be yours, and no one will be the wiser. I think I will go over to Coke [Station] after awhile and attend the show and see the girls dance and sing. They act somewhat like R-h and E-na - L-b. so you see they are some chickens ha, ha. and have so much paint and powder you can't see their skin. Every thing is going sky high down here such as cigars and candy and I have just about quit[.] I have not smoked any today and only once yesterday[.] they cost to[o] much and I don't like the kind they have either. Oh! you don't know how I long for you especially on Sundays and Saturday afternoon[.] it is just awful to see every one else out here with their sweetheart and not a soul that I know. then is when I think most of you altho you are in my thots all the time day and night. and what better could I have. When this reaches you I will probably be getting ready for my dinner and ready to write again, so when you write send it to - Private Frank Raymond Lane Y.M.C.A. No 152 Camp Taylor, Kentucky don't mistake the no. 152.
With love, Frank

Dear Nellie,
This finds me doing O.K. for such a ride and tramp we went thru, it looks very well so far but don't [know] what it will be later on. it certainly was some sight as we came along. every one waved as if they knew us. We got [in] at 1.30 and had dinner about 2 oclock then after dinner went out in front of barricks where we went thru a drill such as attention - at ease - and etc. will go to bed at 9.30 get up at 5.15 so our time will be occupied tomorrow we will got shot in the arm so they say and will be in quarantine 21 days. My overalls that they gave me are no. 40 so you know that they do not pinch me neither are they in style with the times. James Willson is in a bunk right on my left and Jesse Allen is at my feet and all Ripley Co. boys are together now. I saw Joe Ward he met James and I and gave us a wellcome.
Well I had my bath and still feel good hope I will get along O.K.
Will write more next time as I don't know what else to write now.
With Love

Dearest -
This is a Sunday so different from what the other Sundays have been, but it is O.K. as we have a meeting at the Barricks every Sunday morning at 8.30.
Well Nellie when you can send me a bar of washing soap as I had to get a bar yesterday it was ivory and cost 10c so you see every thing is not cheap down here.
James Wilsons wife asked if James had seen me. I guess he has as I sleep right by his side.
When I get to come home on a furlough I will have lots to tell you that I can not write. It seems that some one has to steal as some[one] just now stole a comfort kit. but so far I have not lost anything.
Well I will have to close as it will soon be assembly and I want to close before they call as we have to get when they call.
Write to me whenever you have time as I will have to move some of these days to a different place and that means about a week without mail.
With love
Yours only
Priv. Frank R. Lane

Dearest -
Well maybe I can get my address straightened out after a while[.] they said my mail should be sent to the above address, so don't forget when you write.
Well this is another Sunday here and it seems like two years as I have not been feeling well[.] I had another shot in the arm yesterday and that makes me feel bad.
It certainly is some hot down here but not like I expected as it dosent [sic] worry me anymore than when at home, maybe its because I am inside. It was so dusty here yesterday that you could hardily [sic] see and the room was an inch thick with it.
Just as soon as I get over my shots I am going to ask for a furlough home and that won't be very long[.] will get my last shot about 1 week from Monday (tomorrow) but I don't know whether I will get it or not.
Did you find your letter in the drawer, but I hope you did not open it yet as I don't want you too [sic] until some other time.
The women and girls were going in all direction after supper last night and you can see them every where today, but I have no one down here and only thots [sic] of you because I am here and [you] are at home. I suppose you are all done plowing and have threshed by this time, and it seems funny not to see any one farming around here and to hear no threshing machines.
The men are still coming in and there will soon be about 80,000 here so you see they still have a few men left. the papers say the allies are still driving the Germans back so I hope the war will soon be over.
Well I can think of nothing else to write so will quit for this time.
With love
Frank

Dearest -
This is enough to make a preacher swear one will tell you to write one address and some one else will tell you another. now the Mess Sargent says this above address is right. so look out that you get this one I may get your letters but it is best to write to this address.
I went over to my old address and got a letter from Pa. they say Alice and Fred are going to have a sale the 15th Aug and that the grain is going to spoil unless it quits raining altho their corn is extra good.
Did you get my watch back O.K.?
It is hot enough to wash dishes in any of the water and the men can hardly stand to drill altho they could stand it better than if they had ice water.
It certainly has been hot in the kitchen today, and I just have to stand it until tomorrow noon then I get off 24 hrs.
Well the women were thick down here Saturday evening and Sunday but none for me and it was lonesome to[o]. seemed like I had no friends, but I guess I have just the same.
A bunch of the K. Ps are setting here and they are talking all kinds of nonsense and I come very near writing some it it to[o].
Say don't kill off all those roosters as I don't hear any talk down here ha! ha!
Noel said Octave had taken my place I suppose he meant teaching my class ha! ha! hope so any ways. because if it was my other place I would come home right away, see.
Keep all you kisses and hugs for me.
With love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
This finds me in the squad room trying to rest but it is so hot that I can hardily [sic] sit still so guess I will try to write you a few lines, as it [is] about all I can do to pass away the time, and I can spend it in no better way.
My vac[c]ination is getting along all right and if nothing happens it will be O.K. in a few days.
Well I had a no 1 disappointment this morning. I wanted to come home on a 5 day furlough but could not because so many men were out. so the captain said but I don't see why I could not have been one of them.
Well I just came back from the school. went over after those apples you sent. they were fine but won't last long as they were to[o] good. well I saw the other Frank Lane[.] he said he did not get any packages of mine but he did get the letter which you mailed at Aurora but it wasn't opened[.] said he would see that I got every bit of mail intended for me because he know[s] where to find me now.
One of the cooks father was here this morning from Illinois, and he brought a box of cake & chicken he divided up and it certainly was grand as Nora says.
The candidates have just come in and they are just about all in it is so hot. I don't see hardily [sic] how they stand it.
If you can send my little harp also some cigars some time do so it will be [a] past [sic] time any way and we need something to keep our minds busy on something.
Writing every day as I have been doing the past week, my letters won't be so long but perhaps you will enjoy them just the same. I hope so at least.
The boys certainly enjoy themselves to have to live such a life as they do and I don't see how they do it, altho many or the most of them go to Town of Louisville every Saturday evening. but that kind of times don't suit me here at least for there is only one place for me to enjoy myself and that is at your side.
Are Henry and Anna going to attend the State Fair? I see in the paper where they are going to have some war trophies from Germany on exhibition, and they will be worth seeing.
Well I guess I will quit and write again tomorrow night.
Good bye sweetheart until I write again. Yours with love,
Frank Raymond Lane

Dearest Nellie -
Just received your box of candy apples, bananas and writing material, so will write you a few lines. got your letter which you wrote the 11th this morning but I did not get the box till evening.
Well I will keep both tablets as the fellow who wanted the other one is over in the 29th Co. across the railroad and I am not going to carry it to him.
I am sorry that it has been so hot there you are loosing [sic] all your tomatoes, but we can't understand every thing.
The reason I don't start to school is because they have a system just like the Moores Hill College and we will have to go two months before we have completed our studies, then we are graduates[.] we will get to be Chef or Mess Seargent [sic] who gets $60 [per month] and that is what I want. so if I get to be a graduate cook I am going to come home for a while if I can and you can prepare to get ready to take part of my wages after that. I don't expect to get a furlough now until I am thru school.
Well the months will soon go by if we are kept busy all the time, as we have been in the past few days. when I am off duty, I get to sweep the squad room and go over to the Y.M.C.A. and write letters so you see my time is well spent. Just as soon as I get my money [I] am going to town long enough to get my pictures taken and if they are good I may send you one of them.
I expect to go to the place where I moved from Sunday afternoon to see if any one is there from up around home as they are coming in from all over the U.S.
I have not read my [word indecipherable] yet but tomorrow after noon will have some time and while I rest I will read them.
Well I have to get up about half past three in the morning so will quit for the time.
As ever yours with love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Will write again altho I almost feel as if I ought not as I have not had an answer since about Tuesday or Wednesday at the most. but guess you were to[o] busy but could you not write just a few lines at least twice a week. Oh, kid you don't know how I enjoy those letters. if you knew what we have to contend with [by] the way of tempt[at]ions you would be shocked to the utmost. they [are] such as I can hardily [sic] name, but just a few are vice, swearing, and vulgar talking. these are the most we have here. the boys go to town at least once a week, but I have not yet and that is not all. as long as you still love me rest assured that if I go to town I will come back just as much a man as I was when I went. I may have not always been O.K. but since you have come into my life I have been different and will continue to do so from now on[.] some of the books we read here give us a lecture on the tempt[at]ions that we should shun and why. So remember that when I come back to you I will be just as good as when I left, so help me God.
We are to have an inspection by an officer from Washington this morning and so we are trying to clean up. I will go back on duty at noon and then tomorrow afternoon I am going over to see if my Co. is still where they were.
I heard that Talcum powder would take dandruff out of your hair and would also keep your hair from coming out and would make it grow in again. I am going to try it when I come home.
Well I have to go wash some duds so I guess I had better bring this to a close. you see we have no special wash day down here, just wash when we have time so this [is] my time and I always try to keep my clothes clean.
Write soon as you can and believe me always as yours to command
With love
Frank

[Circa August 20]
Dear Nellie -
Again I am off duty and have just come back from Cokes Station where I had my hair cut and you just can't guess by who. well I will tell you it was a married woman[.] she barbered me while her man did some one else. you will have to come down here and start a barber shop then you can cut my hair to suit. see ha! ha! and you could love any one of the boys who came in. ha! ha! not.
I got my watch to-day and it is O.K. and thank you very much for the fob. it is O.K. sure enough I am going to send you a little present[.] it was the best I could find but if you don't like it to wear lay it aside. will send you a picture when I have them taken, as I had my money order cashed today, but I did not have my coat on so I could not have it taken otherwise, as the coat is what puts the finishing touch on.
It is nice and cool here where I am writing but when I was outside it was hot and I sweat just like I was in the harvest field.
am looking for Alice & you any day now and I don't want to be disappointed, as I have had to[o] many disappointments now.
Well I did a big washing today washed three towels and undershirt and an union suit but have not done any ironing yet and you know that we dont do any down here until we get them on. ha! ha! and they look like S.t. (oh look out now quaker.)
I have not started to school yet and don't know when I will but suppose they will let me know when they get ready for me.
I cant think of much to write today but perhaps I can think of something else after a while. I am going to take this over to the Y.M.C.A. and send it when I mail your Service Pin so that they will come about the same time. wish I had my pictures now so you could see how I look. I sure feel good but don't get much heavier and don't think I will yet a while. I sure eat plenty but have not been able to eat as much as 14 [Sic. Probably meant 4. Could also be read as 1 1/2 ] pieces of pie altho we had apple cobbler today for dinner, and tomorrow we are going to have Indian Pudding for dinner.
I am also going to send a slip I cut out of the Louisville Paper and see if you read it in the Republican.
I have been writting [sic] letters for a fellow who can't write his name is Earnest Minor from the Hills of Kentuck. he is a good fellow but as green as [word indecipherable]. now don't let any one see this letter because they might think that the Army hadn't helped me much toward bettering my character.
Well sweetheart I just received you letter you wrote Aug 18. it sure was some letter. no I don't think Ann is mad as I had a letter from her it was written Aug 7 and I got it about the 14th so you see it did not come straight to me.
Well if it would have been any one else but Ruth [Ligget] & Noel [Lane, his brother] Liggets would talk their old head off about it. I don't care how much they stay together just so they let you alone, but they must not step on your toes as that make[s] my Irish dander arise.
You asked what I did. Well we get up at half past 3 in the morning when I am on duty help get breakfast then serve it, and just as soon as breakfast if over we get the table ready and scrub it with Dutchs then dry it good, also scrub the floor, clean out the ice box, also the storeroom and the bread box. the[n] the meat comes and if beef we have a meat class, for instance if a hind quarter, we say the first thing to do is to cut off all the fat then seperate [sic] the Loin and flank from rump, round and shank, then the round from the shank, next the flank from the loin then it is hung in the ice box, so you see we have some little to do. now it is time to get dinner and we proceed to put on potatoes, beans make corn bread, or what ever is to be done. we have inspection every morning so we have to have every thing ready by nine oclock.
Then when I am not on duty I wash clothes write letters attend the meat class, or go over to the Y.M.C.A. and walk around some so that I got some out door exercise, because to[o] much indoors is not good for me.
Perhaps Octave will get to serve Uncle Sam yet if they keep on I hope so at least altho I don't want to wish any one any bad luck.
No I have not seen Agnes and I don't care to as she is not to my suiting altho any one from home would look good if only a curdog.
Well I havn't [sic] been over to see Mr. Boldery and I don't think I can as it is quite a ways from here.
My God kid I can [not] bear to think of you in camp as a nurse and whatever you do think of your care at home first you are needed there and perhaps I can see you once in a while [if] you are at home but if you get in the Nurse Corpse why I may never, and that is not all[.] you can do your bit at home better than here.
What was the matter with the machine went [sic] it would not go was it out of oil or was it just contrary?
Well if Octave is not careful I will have the best record after all when it comes to Sunday School work as the Preacher never called me down once I just despise to have a class act like they did, but I guess they don't know any better.
I certainly do prize every thing that you send as I did when at home if anything more so because it speaks now for you and love but when at home you could speak for yourself. When you are away it only makes ones love come out stronger and I can think of nothing else but you, and that will keep me as God is my helper.
Wishing you luck I remain as ever yours with all Love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Again will write you a few lines as I am again at liberty[.] Just went over to the Y.M.C.A. and got some envelopes so that I could send you one of my pictures. they are not extra yet you can see partially how I look in uniform. Had these taken yesterday morning at Coke Station just across the track from w[h]ere we were at first. Am going to send two and you can take your pick and if you don't want both you can give one to Anna & Henry.
Oh! I just received a letter from Louisville Kentucky and you will be surprised just as I was to learn who it was from. Well it was from John Klotters cousin Minnie Klotter and she said that John wrote her I was here, and as she was a friend to every soldier she invited me to their home at 1827 Preston St., Louisville Ky. Now what do you think of that.
I have looked in vain every day this week for you and some of the rest to ome down but guess I am to be disappointed, but oh how I wish you would come if only for an hour. it would be the happiest moment of my life. I received my harp, soap, prunes, cigars, and gum, also the Grit paper, for which I thank you very much. they were all in good shape.
Last night the students had some work to do and did it here where we sleep and of course we got no sleep while they were here and that was about 12 oclock, and this morning I was so sleepy I could hardily [sic] go[.] hope it doesn't happen very often.
It is not so cool today altho it is not hot[.] last night it was cool enough to sleep under the blanket but it won't be very long until we can use our covers all the time.
I wrote Pa & Nell a letter yesterday and suppose by now that they have read them and are ready for another.
When I come home I will make some corn bread for dinner and some hamberger [sic] as I made for supper last night also some orangeade then you can see how I can cook ha! ha! then perhaps you will milk and feed the chickens while I get breakfast see.
Have Carl & Gusta married yet [?] I have heard no one mention them yet altho there is a fellow by name Liggett in this battery.
I suppose you folks have been digging potatoes for some time and are they much good [?] but I guess not as it has been to[o] dry. we certainly use lots of potatoes down here about 50 lbs at a time. we had mashed potatoes chocklate [sic] pudding, dressing, roast beef, gravy, green beans, tomatoes, and ice tea for dinner so you see we have plenty to eat.
That money that you got for those snaps you take that to use at Sunday School and when you put in a nickel put one in for me and if you don't want to do [it] that way use it yourself as I would use it for you if I were there. Oh Nellie you know what my greatest desire was and is and if it can be brought about any way that is right I would that it could be done, because I surely deserve to have a few happy moments in my life so if I come home we can try to bring this about now can't we. I believe you are willing[.] you talked that way once and I believe you. you don't know how your name in my thots helps me[.] it would make any one shun temp[ta]tions if any thing would and we have all kinds here and at all times.
You may think me foolish for writing this but change places with me and see what you would do.
All for this time
Yours with love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Will write you a few lines and if they come out as they should you will get this Monday. I was again disappointed[.] I wanted to go over to Coke Station but I did not get a pass. oh well such is life in the army.
Received your letter yesterday and am sorry that my people did not ask you to come along, altho as yet they have not been here but may be they will come tomorrow.
Tomorrow we go out to camp just across the road from here[.] it is not very far[.] it is just to get a sight of how to do cooking in the line.
We got word this morning that we will leave this place Sat. next or Sunday, and I don't know what they will do with us as we will get our orders later. perhaps if we have every thing in tip top shape we might get a furlough oh! how I wish we would.
Alice had told me about your father's accident - but I forgot to mention it when I wrote. I hope he is better now.
You can call up Nell and tell her not to write after Wednesday or so that I can get the letters by Friday evening because we might leave and then I would not get my mail. so if you see any one who intends to write tell them to write so I get it by Friday. see as I don't want to miss any mail as that is what keeps a fellow alive down here.
You must not let any one read this letter as I am going to write some that a few must not read.
All I have to say is that if Henry don't think enough of you to bring you down to see me he does not think of any thing but his old money and some day he will find out that it is not all, and he might have to come to war too if they pass that law, and then when he is here he may want some one to come and see him.
If they take all the boys from home the girls will be just as bad off as the hens when you kill the roosters ha! ha! but I hope that it is not so for I believe that we will have won before long then the welcome the boys will get when they come home. it wont be the slacker who stays around home and loves the girls while we are gone. Oh, it makes me quiver when I think how some girls do, have a lover and then just as soon as he is gone allow any Tom Dick, or Harry to go.
I think you did fine with your letters as I have received at least two a week since I have got my address straightened out. But the more the merrier. The cigars are O.K. I have smoked two of them and will try another after while. I have not given any of them away and will not as they have [been] given to me by you.
The roads are crowded with machines again today and I suppose they will be tomorrow but no one that I know.
Now don't forget if to [sic] tell any one you see who is going to write tell them what I said and I will write when I find out where we are going.
Hoping to hear from you soon,
I remain yours, with love
Frank

Dearest Nellie -
Received your letter this evening just at supper time so will answer right off. I went on duty at noon and will be on duty until noon tomorrow then I will write another letter. am going to write every day now until I find out where I go after Sat., as we leave here then and I don't know where we will go, but oh how I wish I could come home for a few days for I have lots to tell you when I get to see you.
Your package came O.K. and I thank you very much for the Testament. you don't know how much those books are needed down here. you are doing more for me than you have any idea you are. thots of you would keep any man from going wrong and as God is my helper I will come back to you a better boy than when I left. watch and be patient and the time will come when I will once more be at you door to receive my welcome.
No I can't say that any one of the boys is my special friend, but all seem to share the joy of one another and make this life just as enjoyable as possible. no I can't say that I like it down here, but it is not so bad as I expected. when I am on duty I don't have time to get lonesome but when I am not busy and get to studying about you then is when my heart yearns for home.
No I have not been over to see Mrs Klotter yet as I will have to have a pass when I do and I have not been able to get one yet. but after Sat., I am going to try and see her. I thot at first maybe it was some one who wanted to play with me to see if I was fool enough to come but if you say she is O.K. why I will go. I am keeping the letter and will bring it home so that you can see what she wrote. it is a kind invitation, and as she signed her name Minnie Klotter I thot it was a miss so you know why I was shy.
If you want those two pictures keep them for your self as H & A don't care enough about me to want one of them. Alice thot they were good and like to have blowed up when they left Sunday, but Pa did not act like he did when I left the first time, but he worries for fear I will have to go across. but I don't think I will but you can never tell.
Well Mrs Hillig doesn't appreciate a good turn when she gets it as that was once when they did not have to hand out any money. besides your dad fixed their buggy for them, but the more you do for them the more you can do.
It seems hard to be down here but think what it would mean for me to be at home and all the rest gone. it would hurt just as bad then as every one would look on one as a slacker.
The paper today said that the French, British and Yanks were still advancing and that some prisoners they had taken said that Germany would soon have to fall. I don't care how soon I want a stop put to this waste of human lives and property.
It is a great deal cooler here now as it rained all night and all day today and looks favorably for tomorrow.
I don't know whether Pa got home O.K. or not but I expect a letter any time now telling me how they made the trip, but they acted like they were awful tired. they said the road was awful rough altho it only took about four hours to come.
The letter you sent in the paper are good. I am glad that Martin got to be a Seargant [sic] but suppose he will be so big when he comes back that he won't notice we folks.
No I don't have to drill and have not drilled any since I came to this kitchen but I have not forgot all what I learned the first two weeks and will show you what it was when I get home. all I do is what there is to be done in the kitchen. but I would have started to school I would have drilled.
Now when you write don't write if you think I won't get your letter Friday evening or Sat. noon as the Candidates will leave Sat. noon and we will stay and help clean up and I don't want any mail left in the office.
Will quit and go bathe but will write again tomorrow evening.
Yours as ever
with love
Frank

Dearest -
Just received you letter of the 23rd and I sure was glad to get it. I began to think you were sick and could not write it had been two long weeks since I saw or heard from you. you never said why you did not write sooner.
Well I had to report back to my Company this afternoon and I am now transferred to the Artillery Kitchens and as far as I know will stay where I am, altho there is some prospect of going to West Point. I am going to try and come home a few days when I find out what they intend to do with me, so you can watch the road.
I saw one man laid out this morning just back of our kitchen. a heavy[-]loaded truck started to pull the hill and could not make it, and while they were backing down (the brakes would not hold) they landed the back end in the big ditch and one man who was riding on the back was thrown under the boxes and was carried to the Hospital unconscious, but is getting along O.K. now.
I had a letter from home yesterday but they did not write much. said they had a letter from Alice and they had bought a farm.
Wonder who put that in the paper. some one making fun I guess ha! ha! but it was some send off was it not.
If I can get my check cashed tonight I will send some home so watch the mail and when you write always put return on the envelopes so that if I did not happen to get it, you would.
I broke my ring this morning while getting some ice out of the box and guess I will send it home[.] I don't want to destroy it altogether, and we have such heavy work it is to[o] much for a light ring.
I only hope and pray that they don't send me any farther away than I am for now I have a chance to come home but if I get farther away I may not.
I have written every other day since I was home and I can't understand why you don't get my letters, and then I only had one for all those[.] I will make you talk you head off when I see you. ha! ha!
Hoping to hear real soon
I am yours forever

[Thursday] Nov. 7, 1918
Dearest -
I am going over to the Y. to see if there is any mail from you, but first I am going to write a few lines.
Last night we had a feast fit for a queen and we all had a good time also we got some extra pay for our exertions, and so did the K of Ps as they worked until eleven o'clock so as to get the dishes washed. the package I sent you yesterday evening was a sample of the cake and also some of the paper napkins. I would have sent more but they were all used up before I knew it. You can keep them as a rememberance [sic] of the 6th day of November 1918. Say ^1:30 PM^ but I am happy word just came that Germany had accepted the peace terms and the bells and whistles were making a lot of noise.
oh! I hope it so for I sur[e]ly want to come back to you and home.
I will finish this when I have come back from the Y.
Friday morning Nov. 8. will try to write you a few more lines. oh! sweetheart Nellie are you sick? that you dont write I am worr[y]ing about you it has been more than a week and yet I have not had a line from you.
I went down to see Mrs. Klotter last evening they said they had been worried about me as they had not heard or seen me for so long, but Anna had written that I was home sick. They were tickeled [sic] to see me.
And say! they have t[w]o new babies in their family the d[a]ughter has a boy and the daughter-in-law has a daughter. I wonder if I brought them that luck ha! ha! they are so proud of these new comers.
The Louisville people tried to tear up things yesterday when the good news came and they were just wild last night. say I will be coming home some of these days and then home and you.
I am going over to see about my money as they say I can't get it until Dec.! and I am going to hallo & whop, and raise h--l in general because I was home sick and could not sign the pay rool [sic] in October, but I did in September.
This to one I love
I am your as ever

I was at Coke Station this morning for a short time just out for exercise. those who were down town last night say that every one was out p[a]rading because of the War News. it sounds as if something was coming[.] hope all new that are good news are true, as I want to come home to stay.
The Kaiser has left his throne and the Crown Prince refuses to take his place so it sounds as if we were getting the best of them al[l]round.
I hope that it won't be many more letter[s] that I will have to write from here, and then I won't leave you any more unless you say so. see. for when I come back I am coming for you. I am going to send you something about wed. [Wednesday?] if noting prevents so watch the mail box and maybe I will have some of your letters by that time.
The Mayor told one of the K of Ps that all of us special duty men would be discharged by the last of this month. gee wouldn't I be glad.
Bye Bye sweetheart until I write again,
With love
