[Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Friday, September 6, 1918. 25 Battery F.A.C.O. T S Camp Taylor, Kentucky [Probably September 5, 1918]

Sweetheart Nellie -
Well at last I have found out where I am going, for at least two weeks, then I don't know where, so you must write every way [sic] until I tell you when to quit. I came here this morning and find it a better place than I left. I was on duty until noon and now I am off until Monday noon. I won't get to come home yet for a while as I will have to work for two weeks more and then I will try for a furlough. I went over to my Company this afternoon and got my courtesy card. now perhaps I can get a pass to see Mrs Klotter. hope so at least. This morning the artillery was moving to West Point Kentucky, and the string lasted for 1/2 hr and was nothing but horses, men and guns mounted on carriages [word indecipherable]. it sure was some sight. Well the paper says that Germany can't last longer than 60 days and if this be true it means as all home [Sic.] before long. hope so with all my heart altho I would have liked to have run a bayonet thru one of those human destroyers. I saw Will Bateman over at the 29th Company and he gave me one of his pictures, so now I will have to give him one of mine. he expects to be transferred before long. he does not know where but I have an idea to Alabama. I want you to answer this right away if you can get time, but if you have to[o] much to do, and take care of Bonnie[?] besides you will be awful tired and I dont want you to work to[o] hard because when I come back I want to find my w-fe [sic] looking rosie and well, ready to welcome one who is trying for her sake to be a man. I am trusting that this won't be long, aren't you.
Yours to command I remain, with love
Pvt. Frank R. Lane
25 Battery F.A.C.O.T.S.
Camp Taylor, Kentucky

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Thursday, September 12, 1918.
Camp Taylor, Kentucky [Wednesday] Sept 11, 1918
Dear Sweetheart - Well I am back in the barricks [sic] and have moved most of my stuff. got here O.K. about 12 oclock some what tired and not as happy as when I got home Sat. evening. A Mrs Redwood stepped up to my side at the depot just after I got off the train and ask[ed] me if I was waiting for a car to camp, and when I told her I was she wanted to know if I knew where 22nd Co 6 Bat. was. well I went with her to the street where the co. was but [they] would not let her in as her boy is quarinteened [sic] but if she would wait until 5.00 she could see him at the edge of the camp. She lives in Cincinnati she was glad that I happened along when I did and paid my street car fare. Well I got my package O.K. and have sampled my chockolate [sic]. it is O.K. It is so lonesome down here now that I feel as if I was entirely forsaken. but I know that as long as I have you I am not. I just don't know what to do, but suppose I will feel better when I get to work again. Thurs., Sept. 12. Sweetheart, I will now finish my letter which I started yesterday as I just got my new address. well I am lucky in one way as I find my cook John Richie on the same shift, so I will still have it better than if I was alone with strangers. It rained last night after midnight, awful and the lightining [sic] was just fearful, but this morning it is pretty. I have been eating some of my candy and it is very good. I think of you every piece, just tastes like home. Did you get home O.K.? but I know you did, and what are you doing now? do not cut corn so hard as to make yourself sick. oh I wish that I could do that for you, and I will some of these days as the Yanks & Allies continue to win. The place here where I sleep is right by the Y.M.C.A. just like this [a small drawing of two squares next to each other]. Now if you should happen to come down to see me come to the Hostess House which is at the end of the St. car line. first let me know when you are coming, then I can meet you there [.] if you could start in the morning you would get here on the train at 11.55 in Louisville and at the Hostess House at 12.15 then you could catch the 4 oclock for home[.] see. I found this out yesterday and that would give you 2 hrs with me. the railroad comes from town south like this [a crude map showing the route from Louisville to “where I am.”]
My address is Cook Frank Raymond Lane 6th Observation Battery F.A.C. O.T.S. Camp Taylor, Kentucky
Yours with love [no signature]

Letter addressed to Miss Nellie F. Rahe, Milan, Indiana, Rural Route #2, Box 52 Postmarked Monday, September 16, 1918.
6th Observation Battery F.A.C. O.T.S. Camp Taylor, Ky. Sept. 14 1918
Dearest Nellie - Will write you a few lines then write one to Pa as I have written to no one except you since I got back. It is certainly fine weather now and one can sleep without the flies bothering[.] I did not get up this morning until half past eight. Ritchie and I got a pass and went to Town last night. I did not know Louisville was so large. it is rather nice but not like Pueblo was. we took in one show the Alamo and it was fine. I saw Curtis Thompson on the street last night and he is just a little way from me[.] he is in the Hospital[.] think I will go over before long to see him. He looks good but does not like it here says he would rather go over there but cannot because of his hearing. Coke Station certainly was crowded with people last night and today coming from the fair and some coming to see the boys. I heard today that we will get our winter clothes the last of this month and that the cooks and K of Ps will get a 5 day furlough. I certainly will if I get the chance. I have just washed out the pants I wore home, and when I finish this letter will take a bath as I can sleep and be ready to get breakfast. Ritchie is writing to his sweetheart. he is in the same fix that you and I are, and they expect to marry just as soon as he gets out. such is our luck. You should have heard the cooks laugh when I put my apron on[.] said I had on a ladies apron, but it went in one ear and out the other[.] see it was none of their [word indecipherable].
Hoping to hear from you soon, I remain as ever your love C
ook Frank Raymond Lane
6th Observation Battery
F.A.C.O.T.S. Jewish Hospital (Louisville, Ky.) -- History
Description
An account of the resource
In this letter to the Jewish Hospital board president Samuel Hess, Gussie Newberger outlines how the Jewish Ladies Benevolent Society No. 1 wants its donations to the hospital to be used. She explains that the society would like $65 spent on a “Demonstrator” doll for medical training, “in order to protect the Charity Patients from Fright [and] Exposure” from being used as learning material for medical or nursing students.
Through donations and volunteer work, the Jewish Ladies Benevolent Society No. 1 contributed to the mission, maintenance, and growth of Jewish Hospital. The Jewish Welfare Federation and the National Council of Jewish Women Louisville Section also gave critical support to the hospital.

Description
An account of the resource
In January 1918, distillers and philanthropists Bernard and Isaac Bernheim contributed $100,000 for an addition to the Jewish Hospital. One of the conditions attached to the brothers’ donation was their request to rename the hospital Bernheim Memorial Hospital in memory of their parents. The blank hospital bill with the “Bernheim Memorial Hospital” letterhead is a remnant of the board’s initial acceptance of the donation with its conditions.

Women dressmakers.
Description
An account of the resource
Georgetta and Ella Manser were seamstresses in Cincinnati in the 1880s. At the time, thousands of "sewing girls" worked in the city, assisting dressmakers, tailors, and other clients with basic tasks. Most worked long hours and were poorly paid. Georgetta and Ella's mother described their work in an 1885 letter:
"The girls have to work very steadily from early morn till night, have no time for recreation, but their labor enables them to meet all the expenses and keep a nice home over our heads, and they grow fat on it...I do not think you can have any idea how much sewing they can do. Their custom is very large and constantly increasing. They have to refuse work almost every day. At present they cannot take a new order till June they have so much in the house. Besides they have orders up to November, a whole wedding outfit to make through the summer. They have over a hundred garments in the house."

Letter from Jewish Ladies Benevolent Society No. 1 to Jewish Hospital, October 5, 1914
Description
An account of the resource
In a letter to the Jewish Hospital board president, Gussie Newberger outlines how the Jewish Ladies Benevolent Society No. 1 wants its donations to that hospital to be used. She explains that the society would like $65 spent on a “Demonstrator” doll for medical training, “in order to protect the Charity Patients from Fright [and] Exposure” they may have experienced if used for training purposes themselves.
The dawn of the 20th century brought changes and challenges for American Jews. German Jewish immigrants of the mid 1800s had established houses of worship, community groups, and successful businesses throughout the United States. But the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought a new wave of Jewish immigration from eastern Europe. Fleeing oppression and violence, many arrived on American shores destitute and unfamiliar with the language and customs of their new home. Groups such as Jewish Ladies Benevolent Society No. 1, organized in Louisville in 1849, sought to ease the way of these new Americans.
In his work The American Jewish Woman: A Documentary History (1981), Jacob Rader Marcus describes Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Societies as
“An essential part of the structure, of the very being, of the entire Jewish group in any area. Its functions were manifold. Very often it was a mutual-aid society helping the local Jewish poor, especially impoverished women. Though dedicated to charity and synagogal aid, it was at the same time the social club for the town’s Jewish women. Whatever the guise, the members persisted in emphasizing their identity as women.”

Agreement between Eliza Hundley, James Guthrie, and Robert Tyler
Description
An account of the resource
Women sometimes exercised greater power than the letter of the law accorded them. Annie Henry Christian, an early settler of Jefferson County, directed her husband's salt works operation south of Louisville following his death in 1786. Eliza Tevis, a free woman of color, consulted lawyers on multiple occasions--suing the estate of her former employer for withheld wages in 1838 and drawing up a prenuptial agreement prior to her marriage in 1843.

Letter from Viola Stow to brother Loring Stow, 1858
Subject
The topic of the resource
Women--Education--History.
Description
An account of the resource
The young women found the seminary's rules severe. They were afraid to be caught talking during the strictly enforced quiet study time. In their correspondence, several students refer to their school as a "nunnery." They sometimes found it a lonely place, lacking the company of young men and society. Stow's older brother's occasional visits to the seminary were always highly anticipated.
Stow expressed some envy of her brothers and the difference in their school experiences. She expected that her older brother was "enjoying himself finely" at school in Cincinnati. She told her younger brother that she was glad he was next in line for "edification," assuring him that boys are given more privileges than girls, so he wouldn't have a hard time at school.

Subject
The topic of the resource
Women--Education--History.
Description
An account of the resource
Stow began to see the school in a more positive light as graduation approached. She wanted to be a teacher but expected her mother and older brother to oppose her aspirations. She taught in her hometown for several school terms in the early 1860s but quit teaching after her marriage in 1862.
Several of Stow's schoolfriends also embarked on teaching careers. Stow's cousin, Julia Stow, briefly taught in Marble Hill, Indiana, while Maggie Brown moved farther away to teach music in Loda, Illinois. Melissa Jackson was a teacher in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, before pursuing better pay near the Ohio River in Boone County, Kentucky, which she describes in the letter.
