                    <text>Gerri Snyder
nee
Geraldine Simons

My father was Jacob Simons. He was bom in Eastern Europe. My mother, Esther
Hymson, was also bom in Eastern Europe, near Lithuania. They both entered the United
States by way of Ellis Island. They met in Louisville and were married here.
I was the youngest of four girls. My sisters were Sadie, bom August 24, 1904. She
married Maurice Grossman. Then there was Ethel, August 21, 1906. She married David
Paritz. Leona was next on January 29, 1909. She married Gus Frank, the photographer. I
was bom September 30, 1919.
Our first home was over my father’s store at 409 West Market Street. The store sold
men’s furnishing. At times I worked in the store. I knew all of our neighbors and I
remember the Friedman’s and the Fischer’s. I also recall the Hymson family reunions we
had.

Fontaine Ferry Amusement Park was one of the fun places we used to visit. It was in the
West End and was on the Ohio River. We played in Shelby Park and swam in the pool
there. We also went to Central Park a lot. I did not experience any anti-Semitism.

I remember being at Camp Shalon, the YMHA camp on the Oho River. It was washed
out by the 1937 flood. I also went to Camp Tall Trees, in Otter Creek Park for two or
three years. I was a counselor and really enjoyed the camp experience. Tall Trees was a
resident camp operated by the YMHA of Louisville, and was located near Fort Knox.
The YMHA later changed its name to the JCC, the Jewish Community Center.
My best friend, Georgeann Permer, a catholic girl, lived across the street. We went to
school together and were favorite playmates throughout our childhood.
We were members of Adath Jeshurun. I was confirmed there. I went to Prentiss
Elementary School and later to Tingley and like all the girls at that time, I graduated from
Girl’s High School. I was in the class of 193714 . This was they year of the big flood of
January-February 1937. Our store on Market had flood water in the basement, as did our
home. Because of this, we went to live with my paternal grandparents, Alexander and
Julia Simons, whose home was at Floyd and College. We later moved to 1424 South
Floyd Street and our sons were bom while we lived there.

I went to U of L and was enrolled in the in the Kent School of Social work, however,
after three years I dropped out to marry Sam Snyder on February 27, 1944. We joined
Keneseth Israel and were married there. Even though we were members at Adath
Jeshurun I still maintain my membership at Keneseth.

One of Sam’s first jobs was selling TVs for Sun TV. He later worked for Levy Brothers
Department store at Third and Market and then became a salesman for the Hill
Manufacturing Company of Atlanta, Georgia. He traveled a lot. We had some really great
times. He died February 21, 1983, we enjoyed nearly 40 wonderful years together. After
he died I worked for a few years at the Stevens Research firm, mainly conducting
interviews by phone.

The family enjoyed doing things together. I recall our Passover Seders with the family at
the home of Maurice and Sadie Grossman. After it was finished we all got together to do
the hokey-pokey in the living room.
There are two special vacations I recall; the first was a trip to Spain with Sam in 1969.
We had a wonderful time there. It was our way of celebrating our twenty-fifth
anniversary. The other trip was taken with my sister, Sadie. We went to Israel with a
group led by Rabbi Slosberg.
I have two sons. Marty was bom September 3 1947. He married Julie Caplin in June,
1969 and had two daughters, Caryn and Kim. He married Courtney Brown September 29,
2001 and had Sophie.

Larry was bom September 29, 1952. He married Melinda Muhn on June 12. 1977. They
have a son, Eric, (July 11, 1983) and a daughter, Suzanne, (March 31, 1987). Eric and
his wife have two children, Simon, (Novemberll, 2013), and Michael (September 2,
2015).
In 1957 we moved once more. This time it was to 1611 Al Mara Circle near the Jewish
Community Center. I lived there 53 years.

When I think about my past, it has been a good life and that it was a good time to be
alive. From our home on Al Mara Circle, I moved into Magnolia Springs eight years ago
(2010) shortly after it opened and this is still my home.
