for the JFCS archives on

Phil Flarsheim

July 2011

1. Tell me how and why your family originally came to this country and when? How did
they travel?
My family has lived in this country for a long time; in 1848 we came to Louisville from Milwaukee (on
father’s side—Alfred and Carolyn Rose Glarsheim). Grandfather—A.B. Flarsheim—had a job at
Bernheim Distillers (maybe in sales) until prohibition; then he retired. He was one of five
businessmen who founded Jewish Hospital. A great-uncle, Morris Flarsheim, was head fundraiser for
The Temple on Third Street. Resided in Hanlein, village near Rimbach, Germany; entire family in
1848 headed by Henry.

2. Tell me about your parents - their names and where were they born? Have there been
other family names used in the past? Where, when, and why was it changed?
Lived in Louisville: William Flarsheim, Second & Hill, 1902
Louise Byck, born in Louisville, 1907

3. What is your birth date? What language(s) were spoken in your home?
was born November 19, 1932. English was spoken.

4. Where did you live as a child? Who lived in the same house with you - Grandparents?
Uncles/Aunts?

Brothers?

Sisters?

We lived at 3129 Brownsboro Road (at 2 yrs. old) with mother, father, sister; both grandparents lived
at Commodore Apts.

5. What brought you or your family to Louisville, Kentucky and when did you come? How
did they travel? Did they share any unusual experiences with you?
Bernheim Distillers is what brought us to Louisville; we had no experience. We came by train.

6. What was your neighborhood like? Were there other Jews living in the neighborhood?
Did you walk to school? Sunday school? Synagogue/Temple? What kind of shops
were in your neighborhood?
There were no Jews in the immediate neighborhood. The closest Jewish family to us was the Byck
family on Greenhill Lane. We took a feeder bus to Frankfort Avenue and walked to school from
there. I rode a bicycle when I was older.

7. If you or your family lived in Louisville at the time - how did the 1937 flood affect you
and your loved ones?
Folks were on a cruise in the Gulf of Mexico.

8. If you wished to travel within the city limits what kind of transportation did you use?
Did you travel out of town when you were young? What kind of transportation did you
use when you traveled out of town? And if so, where did you go? What special
memories do you have of those trips?
I took a bus to YMHA, and then a street car. We had two cars. We went to South Florida with Sam
Greenbaum and family.

9. Was your family involved in a synagogue/temple? Were your parents or other family
members religious?
Belonged to The Temple and the Standard Club, were not religious. Mother was president of
Sisterhood and wrote a history of The Temple in 125th year.

10. What holidays and rituals were observed in your family? Do you have any significant
memories surrounding Jewish celebrations and what was special about those
occasions?
Seder; Chanukah, there were no presents, celebrated Christmas and lit Chanukah candles; we had
an Easter egg hunt with the Byck family.

11. Did you attend Sunday School or other religious schools? Were you confirmed? Did
you have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah? What are your memories from that time? Are you still in
touch with some of the people that attended Sunday School with you?
fes, I attended Sunday school and was confirmed; I had a Bar Mitzvah at age 75 in Roanoke, VA. I
am still in touch with Lucy Byck, Toni Goldman, Nancy Ades.

12. What is your educational background? What was your occupation? Who or what
influenced you to choose your career? What kind of preparation or training was
required for your career?
I attended Male High School and the University of Michigan (where my father had gone also).
I joined a Jewish fraternity (ZBT), I was in the Senior Honorary Society and was secretary of Senior
Union at Michigan. My major was Economics; I worked in the army; in a brokerage firm, Stein Bros.
& Boyce; at Citizens Fidelity in the Trust Department

13. How did you meet your mate? At what point did you realize that this was the one you
wanted to marry? Where and when were you married? Do you have children?
Grandchildren?
I met Lois Ades at a party in December, 1956, we dated in 1957, and married at Adath Israel on
November 29, 1958. We had three children and 3 grandchildren.

14. Discuss your involvement in the Jewish Community outside of your temple or
synagogue when you were growing up.
As a junior, I was the first president of Pi Tau Pi.

15. What was your involvement in the non- Jewish community? Did you witness any antiSemitism living in Louisville? If so, how was this incident handled?
’ witnessed no anti-Semitism except for clubs in high school that did not accept Jews. I did not pay
attention—“You knew where you belonged!”
16. How was your family affected by the World Wars? Wars in Israel? Pearl Harbor? What
are your earliest recollections when thinking about major events in history?
I was 7 years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Dad showed me on a globe where it was. I went
to Jewish overnight camp in the summer from 9 to 11 years old in New York state. There was no
anti-Semitism; my family was not affected by World War II.
17. What are your favorite spiritual memories? How did religion affect your life?
I was president of Adath Israel during the time they voted to move. “Dr. Waller wanted to move—so I
wanted to move.”
18. What interests or hobbies did you have when you were young and what are they now?
What schools did you attend and are there any memories that stand out from that time
in your life?
I played golf and basketball; I have the normal memories. I had a privileged life. I loved college.
19. What are your favorite family memories - whether it was with your family of origin, or
your extended family and friends?
Christmas, until I married.
20. What is your legacy? How would you like to be remembered? What message do you
want to leave for your children and future generations?
Being president of The Temple. All three children remember this and are proud of their father.
I am not a religious person; however, while I may not have a deep religious feeling, I feel it is
important to perpetuate the faith. By doing for others, kids learned to help other people.
