Novia James White military studio portrait, ca. 1945

The Novia James White Photograph Collection shares snapshots of a life in peacetime and in war. Through these pictures, we can glimpse some of the ordinary days of White's life growing up in Kentucky, marrying in Los Angeles, and working in the newspaper and insurance industries throughout his later life.

But the bulk of the collection shows days that were far from ordinary. White took dozens of photos during his World War II Air Force service in Japan and the Philippines. These photos depict both magnificent aerial landscapes and scenes of harrowing destruction.
